yes

2nd Answer:

Yes, after she was Queen, she decided to change the country's religion from Protestant to Roman Catholic. The protestants were outraged and started protesting and petitioning Parliament.

So Mary ended that little rebellion by killing 100 protestant leaders.

BUT, most of Mary's bloody deeds were not even done by her, but rather by a certain Countess Elizabeth Bathroy. Bathroy is said to have bathed now and then in the blood of virgin girls, among other horrible things.

The epithet, 'Bloody Mary,' was given to Queen Mary Tudor after her death in 1558. It was applied to her because of the vicious pogroms she launched against the Protestants during her reign. As well as persons of humble status, she ordered the execution of prominent Protestant clergy including Hugh Latimer, Nicholas Ridley and the former Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Cranmer.

Let us look at the background.

1. Mary Tudor was the daughter of Katherine of Aragon, the first wife of King Henry VIII. Katherine of Aragon was a devout CATHOLIC and accepted the authority of the Pope in all matters, secular or religious.

2. After Henry VIII divorced Katherine of Aragon and removed the authority of the Pope in England, Thomas Cranmer declared that Henry's marriage to Katherine was null and void. The implication of this was clear. IT IMPLIED THAT MARY WAS A BASTARD.

3. The divorce of her mother, and Henry VIII's rejection of Papal Catholicism had profound psychological effects on Mary:

a) she became more and more fervently devoted to Catholicism

b) should she ever become Queen she vowed to return England to the Catholic Fold.

c) she vowed to root out those who had been responsible for the actions of Henry VIII as far as these:

i. initiated Protestantism in England

ii. legalised the divorce of her mother and the subsequent inference that she herself was a bastard

4. When Mary came to the throne in 1533 she at once set about preparation for the pogroms. So in 1555 she had Latimer, and Ridley, PROTESTANT CLERGYMEN burnt at the stake. Two years later the slaughter of around 300 known Protestants began. They were publicly burnt at the stake at Smithfield. Finally, in 1536, she struck at Thomas Cranmer, the former Archbishop of Canterbury under Henry VIII and the one who legalised the divorce of Henry VIII and Katherine of Aragon.

So, the nickname 'Bloody Mary' was due to the foregoing factors.
