Theodore Roosevelt had been the US Vice President when President William McKinley had been assassinated, in September of 1901. An an anarchist, Leon Czolgosz, shot him in Buffalo, New York. On September 14, 1901, Roosevelt was swoan in as the 26th US president. At the time he was 42 years old and was the youngest president to be sworn in as US president. As an aside, when the White House became his home, the official residence was called the Executive Mansion. By proclamation, Roosevelt renamed it the White House.

Roosevelt had made a name for himself as one of the Rough Riders in the war with Spain. As US president, he became popular for his stands against big business monopolies. In 1903 he signed the Panama Canal treaty, placing the canal under US control. He also signed into law the creation of the departments of Labor and Commerce.

His public popularity and his style, and his love of nature, was the reasons he was elected in 1904, for a full term.

Additionally, many people are confused about the family ties between Teddy Roosevelt and Franklin D. Roosevelt. They happened to be distant cousins, fifth cousins as it turned out. Also, because both men were from New York, it was believed they were close relatives. They were not.
