Guages are set up so the driver can moniter what is going on with the engine. With guages the driver can see minor changes in the performance and fix accordingly. The problem with warning lights is there is a problem by the time they come on.

We had this same problem and found out through trial and error that there is a switch on the roof control panel (in our 2003 model) that apparently kills all lights in the cabin when the doors open.
