It could be a bearing going out on the timing belt, or one of the accessory drives such as the Power Steering, a/c, etc. I had the same problem and it turned out to be the intake gasket.

I was having idling problems and found a leaking vacuum hose. My 1.9 had a rubber elbow hose right on top of the engine that had a hole in the bend.
I'm having the same issue with a 1991 Ford Escort wagon. I just replaced the fuel pump, fuel gauge is still reading empty to full every few mintues and whenever I downshift and take a right turn the engine just bogs down and nearly stalls.
It is just above the brake pedal, mounted on a bracket. You should see the sensor and the wires right above.

If you have a faulty sensor chances are the check engine light would be on. The code(s) set would help indicate what the trouble is.
This can be caused by the engine not getting enough fuel, or idling too low. It would be best to check with the fuel system and make sure all parts are functioning well.?æ

Changed the pcv valve. It fixed my p171 code on my 2001 escort. Have to get the PVC valve from the ford place. They are the only one that carry the right one. PCV valve is available at AutoZone part # PCV 1001 for 2001 Escort SOHC 2.0L
