have seen problems where the key does not talk to the computer security system correctly. There is a transmitter on your key that has to talk to the antenna in your ignition switch. It can be very, very intermittent. Usually the fix is a new switch with a new antenna which will comes with a new key that has to be programmed into the computers on your vehicle. This can be diagnosed with a scanner. you can bring up the key input going in to the PCM. If the key input is not valid, the fuel injectors will not fire and so no fuel goes into the engine. or

Was worse on hot days and sometimes couldn't get it to start after the car was warm.

If it wouyld die and not start, it would be easier to find but if it is running good when the dealer has it it is hard to find. I don't have an '85 Cadillac, but with carburated engines the easiest way to start them after runing out of gas is to open your airfilter and pour gas directly into the carburator. I :}
The ignition key chip
I would check to see if the fuel pump is working. Fuel pump is located on the drivers side rear on the frame near the gas tank behind wheel.
Here are a couple of things to try: Maybe the latch is not ajusted properly to fully grasp the lid catch or the switch is feeding current to the latch which would require replacement of the switch.
It came with r12. There are some aftermarket freon that will work with r12 called freeze12. If the system is empty I would change it over to r134. You would need a different offrice tube also. Did my 90 lesabre about 4 years ago.
most likely the harness on the side of the radio, drivers side, has chafed through, pull radio and tape over the wires attached to the side of the radio.
