Why would a 2001 Mazda 626 hesitate from a standing start but otherwise run fine?

I have heard that early models in year 2001 had a potential vacuum leak under the intake manifold. Also usually accompanied with an accerelation lag. Mine does the same thing but I supposedly have a later 2001... go figure. Haven't got a clue for it though.

You did not install the belt correctly. It is more than likely out of time. I would advise you to have an expert look at it. You're lucky in that this is not an interference engine otherwise you would've had serious damage when you attempted to start the engine.
