A worn ignition switch causes this. You did not turn the ignition off to the locked position. So you would not need the key to turn the car back on. Make sure when you take your key out you can't turn your car back on and then when you open a door it will not make a noise. Just a security feature.......?

Do any of your lights work ? or if the key is in the ignition and the drivers door is open do you hear the warning chime ? If not , it sounds like a bad battery cable connection or a dead battery

Could it be any of these; Safety belt warning chimeChimes to remind you to fasten your safety belts. For information on the safety belt warning chime, refer to the Seatingand safety restraints chapter. Supplemental restraint system (SRS) warning chime For information on the SRS warning chime, refer to the Seating and safety restraintschapter. Key-in-ignition warning chime Sounds when the key is left in the ignition in the OFF/LOCK or ACC position and the driver's door is opened. Headlamps on warning chime Sounds when the headlamps or parking lamps are on, the ignition is off (and the key is not in the ignition) and the driver's door is opened.
Since the chime is built into the lighting control module, you will not be able to just unplug the chime, so if you swish you can disable the key-in warning switch in the steering column. Remove the lower column shroud and find the single BK/PK wire coming from the kay cylinder area. Snip that wire, and you should be chime-less, at least as far as the key is concerned. It will still ding for ather reasons, like if you open the door with the lights on.
I was told that in the Expedition 2004 you can push the belt release button when the chime is going off and that stops it until the door is opened the engine is turned off. Good Luck
The chime may ring on a 2000 Mazda MVP if a door is open and the keys are not in the ignition because the car has a secondary alarm system that is letting the driver know that a door is ajar. If the door is opened while someone is sitting in the passenger seat it might go off before the person exits the vehicle.
