One of the components driven by the belt or the tensioner has bearings that are going bad or the unit itself like alternator, Power Steering pump, or water pump are going bad. If it has a manual tensioner it is possible that it was overtightened as well.
This year Mazda protege does not have a serpentine belt. It has two belts, one for the alternator/water pump, and the other for the power steering and a/c.
The cost to replace a 1999 Mazda Protege serpentine belt will vary depending on the cost of parts and cost of labor. The prices for the serpentine belt start at $14.56.
I am having the same problem with a 99 Protege. I have changed the alternator and aligned/cleaned the pulleys and the problem persists.I replaced the alternator, on my 1997 Mazda Protege, seven times before someone figured out why the serpentine belt kept breaking. It was the belt tensioner! It had to be removed and rebuilt. Now it is working like a charm!! And I havn't had to replace the alternator in over 3 months!!!!
I just replaced my fan belts on a 2002 Mazda Protege. It came out to a little over $200. I took my car to a Mazda dealership.
No, they are different cars. Even though the Mazda3 replaced the protege they do not have many if any parts in common.
