i have that problem where it sounds like metal scrapping and it was the A/C Compressor clutch that only made noise in the winter. i just ignored it! ---------------- ~Nate owner of a: 1999 Pontiac Grand AM GT 3.4L HO 1996 Pontiac Grand Prix SE 3.1L (dead!) 1994 Pontiac Grand Prix SE 3.1L (Also dead!) both GPs died @ 200,000 miles relating to Lower intake manifold gasket! WATCH THOSE!! I have the same car and a similar sound when cold. I think it could be the sharter silinoid stiching or the powersteering pump.

I would guess that it is the wheel bearing. is it a grumbling sound or an all out grinding? If it is or was a grumbling sound and has turned into a grinding it is probably the wheel bearing.

When you grind your teeth it will sound similar to a person rubbing chalk on a chalkboard. Not a screeching sound, but a grinding, smoothing sound. It can damage your teeth.

Usually that just means the battery is dead. It's trying to crank the starter but doesn't have enough power. Try jumping it from another car and see if that starts it. When a grinding noise is detected first locate the area of the car it is being generated from. Most grinding noises will be being generated while driving, if you are having a hard time detecting the location of the grinding sound, have a helper ride along in the rear seat to give a new perspective on the origin of the grinding noise. A grinding noise can be generated by many things from worn out brake pads to axle bearing failure. Once a grinding sound has been detected action must

A lot of times the grinding sound that is heard when going over bumps is actually the car scraping the cement. If it is not a serious problem then the best thing to do would be to drive slow over the bumps.

Are you Breaking when you get the grinding sound? Or attempting to switch to 4 wheel? Most common grinding sound I know is a worn out brake pad tearing up a rotor. Time for a brake job. New rotors and quality pads can be had for about 150 if you do the labor yourself.

It has a short vowel sound. The A is short as in gram. Grand rhymes with hand and land.
