Your anti-lock control unit computer may be faulty. You should check the diagnostic codes of your ECU, which is under the passenger side floor mat and carpet, under a piece of wood. The anti-lock control unit is somewhere under the back seat, if you have a 2+2 like mine. It is very expensive to replace with a new one, but reasonably cheap to get a used one. I got a used one from a Nissan-only wrecker for around $200 and had my mechanic put it in. My '90 2+2 NA didn't have ABS for years before I got it, and now it works great.
frist the brake light looks like its on but its just the glow of the antilock light it is very bright. the antilock is on your rear axle needs replaceing.
Antilock Brake Light comes on and stays on when the ABS computer detects some problem with the antilock brakesystem components. You will still have normal brake use, but the Antilock system will probably not work as an Antilock brake system is supposed to work. ABS system diagnostic code readers are available and are recommended for diagnostic purposes, however fixing ABS systems is perhaps best left up to the Pros. . .
The Antilock Brake System or ABS light stays on in a 1997 Nissan Pathfinder because there is a problem with the brakes. The brakes are either low on fluid or they need to be changed or adjusted.
If the ABS (antilock brake system) light stays on, there is a problem with the system and it will not function should you need it in a panic situation. Have a mechanic repair it soon for your safety.
There is probably a broken wire at one of the wheel sensors. If you can not find a bad wire have the ABS scanned.
A problem has been detected with the Antilock Brake System : It could be a fuse ( blown or in my case not installed all the way ) A sensor , or some other problem As long as the red " BRAKE " light is not on in your dash , you still have " normal " brakes
If your ABS light stays on you have a problem with the ABS and it is not functioning. Until the problem is fixed the light will remain on.

Defective or misadjusted, brake light switch.
The battery light stays on when the alternator is over or under charging. The red brake light stays on when the parking brake is set or the fluid is low. The abs light stays on when the abs computer detects a malfunction and sets a code.

The brake lights work without the key on, so you have a problem with your brake light switch.
