I am currently dealing with the same problem with my 2002 Dodge intrepid sxt 3.5H.O It is now my understanding that there is something called a speed sensor which would cause this problem. there is an input sensor and an output sensor. i think both need to bne replaced. Iwill return to this thread after i do the work to let you know the result. good luck! Have the trans computer checked for codes. There are dozens of things that will cause the trans not to shift.

Based on information that is generated within the transmission and other sensors in the engine, the solenoid (or any one of them) controls certain functions of the transmission such as changing gears.
There is no separate switch for the overdrive, simply put the gear selector in the overdrive position. It looks like a D inside a square. Not all Chevy Celebrities have the overdrive feature, it was an extra cost option.

Chances are that the overdrive solenoid (forgive my spelling) inside the transmission needs replaced. Not a job for the light-hearted.
