Nice answer. Most claim that they came from the Caucasus regions in and around North Central Asia, but I say that they came from outer space. Not outside of the atmosphere, but alien environments.

One could actually say that the barbarians lived all over the place. The original word was Greek, barbaros, which was used to denote anyone who was not Greek and had a pejorative connotation derived from the fact that the Greeks considered other cultures more primitive. The Greeks also used it to refer to other Greek groups or Greek states in a derisory manner. This was so especially with the Athenians who also used the term with reference to other Athenians. The word created the image of bubbling by non-Greek speakers who could not speak Greek properly. Used as a verb it was used to imitate the sounds of the accents of non-Greeks or their making grammatical mistakes when they spoke Greek. The connotation of the word changed with the conquest of the Persian Empire. After this the word often used to refer to the Persians.

The Romans adopted the term for the Greeks both in its reference all foreigners and its pejorative connotations. They, too, considered other cultures more primitive. Since of freeborn males in the empire were granted Roman citizenship by the emperor Caracalla in 212 AD, the word came to denote everyone who lived outside the Roman Empire.
