The fuel pump is combined with a fuel filter a float (fuel level sending unit) that sends info to the fuel gage. The unit should be located inside the fuel tank. The fuel tank will need to be lowered to access the fuel pump unit. The pump assembly is held in the tank by a lock ring. If you're not too sure about this job you may want to farm the work out. The job isn't too difficult but can be dangerous if not careful. If you still want to do the work yourself I would recommend a repair manual. Haynes and Chilton are very good and will take You through it step by step. For about $18.00 You can get a manual. Most auto parts stores have them or can get You one.

Fuel delivery problems such as a dirty fuel filter, a fuel pump going bad, a faulty fuel pressure regulator.
On a 2001 which is a later model grand am they use IAC(idle air control) motors so idle is ussually factory adjusted. If you are having idle problems check for common driveability porblems first (Spark, fuel, air) and if all checks out correctly then check to make sure the iac motor is operating properly. Let me kno if you need anythnig else.
