If you've got a pushrod engine like a 350 Chevrolet or a Dodge Hemi, it's almost impossible to break a timing chain. On an engine with a chain-driven overhead cam like a Mercedes or a Saab, when the chain breaks it's going to sound like you put every part in your engine in a bucket and threw it against the wall. If someone brought you the car not running, take the valve cover off and turn the engine over with a wrench; if the camshaft doesn't turn while the crankshaft's turning, the timing chain is broken. (As are half the valves, probably two pistons and lots and lots of other parts.)

In an interference-type engine, the engine will destroy itself, then not run.
In a non-interference engine, it will simply not run.
No.
when it is broke
As far as I know the 2.3 liter DOHC engine in a 2008 Ford Ranger has a timing CHAIN
the LeSabre has a timing CHAIN. It does not need to be replaced. (unless you broke it :)
If it broke, yes.
Yes
If a timing chain broke, the engine wouldn't run and a compression test would read "0".
It has a timing belt. Mine broke after 140K miles.
right in front of the crankshaft pulley beside the oil filter....is the timing chain cover(two timing chain...#1 on the crankshaft sprocket, #2 on the cam sprocket. Need to lower the engine to access the timing chain. Timing chain, not necessary to be replace, unless they broke loose.Other than that it remain with the life of the van.
Timing chain slipped or broke
If your vehicle is at least 60,000 miles it is recommended you replace the timing chain. If your timing chain broke, your engine would NOT run because the timing chain is what rotates your engines camshafts to open and close the valves. Also, you would have some serious engine damage if you were driving and your engine suddenly just quit and it happened to be your timing chain. There really is no way to "check" a timing chain as it's hidden behind the belt area of the engine (if I'm not mistaken). If you're going to go through the labor of "checking" a timing chain, you might as well replace it, as the average timing chain job costs about $220, $200 of that being the labor.
Need to know where the timing chain gear marking are?
