Why is water H2O and not 2HO?

H2O has 2 moles of Hydrogen and 1 mole of oxygen. 2HO has 2 moles Hydrogen and 2 moles oxygen. The 2 in H2O is usually a subscript which corresponds only to the element/ion before it, in this case, H. The 2 in 2HO is called a numerical coefficient which corresponds to the whole compound after it.
