Antonio López de Santa Anna (1794-1876, often Santa Ana) was a Mexican general and frequent President of Mexico in the mid-19th century. He is remembered for two major conflicts, the Battle of the Alamo (1836) during the Texas Revolution, and as a restored Mexican leader during the Mexican-American War (1847).
In addition, Santa Anna had established himself as the dictator of Mexico by 1835. He also became unpopular among many Mexicans when he sold what is known as the Gadsden Purchase in 1853 to the United States. The cost was $10 million. Many Mexicans regarded the deal as yet another example of Santa Anna's profligacy, and this opposition hastened the end of Santa Anna's political career.
He went to regulars school until he was 16 when he became an Army Cadet.
He was educated until the age of 16 when he became a cadet in the Spanish Army of New Spain and there his real education began.
