To attempt to resolve the dispute between the North and South
regarding slavery, Congress convened on December 3, 1849. The
result of this convention was the Compromise of 1850.
The Compromise of 1850 allowed the New Mexico and Utah
territories to choose, in the future, to become slave states. The
South avoided adopting the Wilmot Proviso. A stronger Fugitive
Slave Act was passed by Congress.
