As you frequently aerobically AND anaerobically exercise, you are helping your heart reduce the amount of work it takes to produce that same level of output. Because your heart is a muscle and the better shape it is in, the less harder it needs to work. That is why many athletes who are in tremendous shape may have a lower heart rate because the heart can still pump blood throughout the body without doing as much work as a heart that is diseased. If you have clogged arteries for example, it takes the heart that much more work to do it's job to get the blood pumped through to the lungs/body as it would if it did not have any resistance such as an athelete who has a healthy heart.
