The Body Count began early in the Vietnam War 1965 - but it became senseless, because they count all killed people (also civilians after bomings). At the end of the 60ies the US Army stoped it and said, this is an inefficient way of calculating. At the beginning they wanted to count just all these killed vietcongs after the battle - but the GIs counted every killed person - South and North Vietnamese. Therefore it became senselss and they stoped the Body Count. But if you want to know more about it, ask Vietnam Vets. I am just from Austria - I am in the same age like your Vets and I got these informations from Vietnam Vets in the 70ies. They can tell you more about it. Vietnam was a war of attrition. Kill as many communists as possible. The communists in turn, will try to do the same to us. He that kills the most wins the war. The measuring device was the "Body Count." The tactic used was "Search and Destroy." Vietnam War: 1. Strategy-Attrition 2. Tactics-Search and Destroy 3. Result (add em up)-Body Count
WWII was fought the traditional way...taking ground. Casualties were accepted as payment for taking that "ground" (or sea). Vietnam was NOT fought by taking ground. The ONLY way to measure success in Vietnam was by counting bodies. And those "bodies" had to be hunted for...via the methods of Searching for them, and then Destroying them (Search and Destroy). The term "body count" was not (normally) used in WWII. The term "body count" became part of the US language during the Vietnam War. For casualty data during the Battle of the Coral Sea, see that battle's website; which will also list ship numbers, ship names, and the opposing commanders during the engagement.
Air war over North Vietnam. Ground war in South Vietnam; Riverine war in South Vietnam.
Yes. Vietnam was a French colony. They lost a Vietnam War and were thrown out of Vietnam before America tried to win a war in Vietnam. America also lost a Vietnam War.
The Vietnam war from 1959 to 1975.
Wars prior to Vietnam were ground taking wars (territorial gains). Vietnam was a body count war-a war of attrition.
Body count became the measure of success in a war of attrition.
The war of attritition. Body count; Search and Destroy. Kill more of them than they could of us.
Strategy: Attrition Tactic: Search & Destroy Accounting process: Body Count
The strategy in the Vietnam War was to attrit the enemy. Kill more of them than they could of us. The tactic of "Search and Destroy", which resulted in the process of counting bodies (the body count), became the normal function of the Vietnam War.
US strategy was primarily based upon "attritition", which resulted in the tactics of "Search and Destroy". A function which required the counting of enemy bodies, which in turn created the term, "body count". The Vietnam War, became a war of body counts.

Don't fix it, if it's not broken (US Army). Strategy is outside of cannon shot (range). Tactics is within cannon shot (range) (Napoleon). Search and Destroy (Vietnam War). Body Count (Vietnam War). Bomb them back into the stone age (General LeMay referring to North Vietnam). Torch it (Vietnam War: Using the zippo cigarette lighter). Chopper em in (Vietnam War).
On the ground the ritual was called "the body count", air strikes used estimates (read guesstimates).
The Vietnam War was fought by the body count system; in contrast to taking ground. The only way to obtain "that body count" was to "find em, then destroy em." There were two other options available: Invade North Vietnam or use nuclear weapons. Then the body count method wouldn't be needed, those two options would bring back the traditional "taking ground" way of fighting.
