The North Vietnamese Air Force has recorded 16 aerial aces from the Vietnam War; however the US recognizes about 3 North Vietnamese pilots as aces. An Ace is a pilot that has scored a minimum of 5 aerial kills during air to air combat (dog-fighting). The US had 2 confirmed aces during the war; Ritchie and Cunningham, both flew the US F4 Phantom jet. North Vietnamese airmen flew MIG-17's, MIG-19's, and MIG-21's. NVAF pilot MAJ. Pham Tuan, flying a MIG-21, reportedly shot down a USAF B-52 on 26 December 1972 with an air to air missile; the USAF verifies a B-52 lost that date, but to a SAM (Surface to Air Missile). If Major Tuan's aerial kill can be verified, he would be history's only airman to have shot down a B-52 Stratofortress bomber in aerial warfare. MAJ. Tuan was Vietnam's first Cosmonaut, when he and Soviet Cosmonaut Viktor Gorbatko were launched into space from the Baikonur Cosmodrome on 23 July 1980.

One of the greatest achievements was the expansion of medical evacuation. There was no helicopter medevac in the U.S. outside of the military before the Vietnam War. Consequently many thousands of lives have been saved here in the U.S. since the war using quicker medical access for accident victims, etc.

Another was learning the effects of mistreating returning combatants.

Today, vets returning from war are treated far better than those coming home from Vietnam. We learned a lesson as Americans, and changed.

Vietnam brought the dawn of battlefield television news reports to U.S. livingrooms. The expansion of news coverage in many different areas moved us closer to the 'information age.'

Lots of combat experience in modern jet warfare over the skies of North Vietnam; which led to "Dog-Fighting" schools such as TOP GUN and the USAF's RED FLAG.

In addition all US fighters now have guns on them...whether they need them or not.

Militarily: All of today's new aircraft: F22 Raptor, B1 and B2 bombers, Blackhawk helicopters, Apache helicopters were designed based upon the experience of the Vietnam War. Guns on jets; stealth; armor protection, crash emergency equipment installed on aircraft, etc. The M1 MBT was the first US tank designed with US tank crewmen input. Built for tank crewmen by crewmen. The last US commander in Vietnam, was Creighton Abrams; today's M1 is named after him. Today's M16 rilfe has been modified to fire short round bursts. A direct lesson learned from Vietnam...GIs were wasting ammo using rock and roll (full auto). Today's protective body armor and kevlor helmets are the result of research from past wars. In Vietnam (and earlier wars) the standard issue GI M1 steel helmet (steel pot) couldn't stop a 9mm pistol bullet (however, it will on most occasions stop a .45, if that bullet is travelling at the designated military speed of 850 fps).

What was one concern associated with both the Korean war and the Vietnam war?

Korea was 5 yrs after WWII; but the concern was WWIII. Vietnam was some yrs after Korea; but a repeat of Korea was to be avoided. After Vietnam, the issue, for the US, was redeeming prestige; which was accomplished with Operation Desert Storm in 1991.

How did the women nurses effect the outcome of the Vietnam war?

US military women were auxiliaries; WACs & WAVEs from WWII through the Vietnam War. Their mission was to support the American fighting man, and to relieve him of certain supportive functions so that he could fight the war. This was accomplished.

Who accomplished the most during the vietnam war?

I would say the North Vietnamese and their leader Ho CHi MInh. They defeated the French, the Americans and the South Vietnamese , conquered all of Vietnam and pretty well accomplished all their objectives. Of course, they paid a big price in loss of life and money.

What president accomplished the most during Vietnam?

It could be argued that LBJ accomplished the most, if a negative way is construed to mean "accomplished." President Johnson brought North Vietnam & the US into direct open warfare in 1964. Prior to that time, the Vietnam war was only a guerrilla war restricted to South Vietnam. Little argument will be made stating that Nixon accomplished the most in Vietnam. Nixon feared nothing and mounted the most devastating aerial attacks upon another nation in military history (Operations Linebacker & Linebacker II). Nixon also openly attacked "into" a foreign nation (twice); Cambodia in 1970 & and Laos in 1971, then got American POWs returned. He then declared victory and sent us home. Kind of hard to beat those accomplishments.

What is the outcome of the Vietnam war?

The war was over for the U.S. in 1973. We accomplished our mission and the South Vietnam forces took over. In 1975 the North overran the South and gained control. Anyone who says '"We lost" is mistaken. We won; the south Vienamese lost 2 years after the U.S. pulled out.

How was morale affected by the type of warfare fought in Vietnam?

In the beginning, until the men got used to it. Leadership in Vietnam was conducted by WWII veterans, they were un-customed to fighting a limited war (a war in which the US military could not "nuke" the enemy until victory was accomplished; as was done in WWII).
