Christopher Columbus was not just curious and noble in motive. He wanted to find a short way to get to the Indies by ship. Since he was a Christian, he wanted to tell the story of Christ to people he met and covert them to Christianity. This is when he wanted to gain POWER. Also Columbus tried for eight (8) years to get King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella to give him ships and money. He demanded to be made a knight, admiral of the sea, be viceroy and governor general of all lands he would discover. He also wanted one-tenth of everything he found of value in the new lands. Christopher Columbus continued to emphasize about his religious feelings and his desire to transform the natives to Christianity and his reverence to the Bible. Yes, it was true that he was concerned about God, but there was something even bigger to him. He was even more concerned about GOLD. Columbus wanted gold more than anything else. In the first two (2) weeks of journal entries, there is one word which is repeated at least seventy-five (75) times: GOLD. This proves that another of Columbus's reason for making his voyage to the 'New World', apart from POWER is WEALTH. In his quest for gold, Columbus saw that the Indians had little gold, and was confident that there were huge amounts of it. He sent out orders to the natives to find a certain amount of gold in a certain amount of time. As a result, if they did not meet their quota, their arms were to be hacked off. The others had to learn from this and deliver the gold. Unfortunately, Columbus could not obtain enough gold to impress the king and queen and his Spanish financiers, and decided to send back to Spain another kind of loot: SLAVES. Christopher Columbus wanted Gold, Wealth and Power! Love Always ~*Mimi*~
He made them as slaves and forced them to become christians. Christopher Columbus actually had to choose between two very different kinds of indigenous people that inhabited this Caribbean area.. The Arawak, that in Chris' estimate were more active, industrious & in his own words "easier to civilize" than their cousins the Carib Indians that lived on different islands. His estimate of them was to be more laid back, simplistic, & naked. So of course that much more difficult to civilize. Since Chris' objective to explore & claim for Spain was not the main reason for his voyage. His motive was the same as all the Spaniards that followed, that being gold & riches. Since his trip on the first voyage yielded no booty he insisted on three more. The first offered little to satisfy him except the strong backs of the souls that lived there. The Spaniards and Portuguese had a trade that profited much by the slaves. Slaves brought the next highest price save for gold.
John Cabot wanted to find new opportunities for trading. He wanted to go to Asia. Thinking it is a shorter route, he sailed west from Europe and ended up in North America. He was inspired to travel after finding out about Christopher Columbus' journey.
Their primary motive was the desire for economic gain.
A short MUSICAL IDEA.
His motive was to get rich, become a governor of a colony and to find a route to Asia. None of it did he successfully accomplish.

A by-motive is a hidden motive.
An ulterior motive is a motive that they have beyond the main motive. They often do not show that they have this motive and it is often not good. The ulterior motive is almost always has it for their own good only.

If we were to list the reasons, this would not likely be 1 or 2, but more of a 1b. The primary goal of these voyages was to find places of great wealth to improve the economic status of the sponsoring countries, so as a result Colonies and Trade Posts were established to continue this financial growth.
