From the end of WWII (1945) until 1960, the US was NOT geared for guerrilla warfare. The US was prepared to fight the USSR, when they came "through the Fulda-Gap" in Europe. Every tank, every warship, every jet fighter plane, was geared for conventional war against the USSR (Soviet Union) in Europe. Including the US Infantryman's battle rifle, the M-14.
With 20/20 hindsight, and the collapse of the USSR in 1990, it seemed all a little bit of a waste, when the historian considers the fact; that the ONLY two major wars to occur after 1945; were in ASIA. The ONLY US personnel that were prepared to fight a guerrilla war, were our US Special Forces (Green Beret). And "they" were President Kennedy's first reinforcement group of men sent to Vietnam.
As history bears out, the US fought the war in Vietnam with cold war weapons intended to fight the Soviet Union. We did learn however, that the guerrilla could be beat, if we applied fire power with search and destroy. The Viet Cong (primarily a guerrilla force), was essentially defeated by the end of 1969, only the hard core NVA (North Viet Army) remained undefeated until we departed the country (when ordered to, the NVA held their ground).
