It was good enough to be the standard sidearm of all branches of the US Military for more than seventy-five years - through both world wars, Korea and Vietnam. The previous issue sidearm had been a .38 caliber revolver. At that time the US Army was attempting to put down the "Moro Insurrection" in the Philippine Islands. Among these insurrectionists were Juramentados, a highly individualized type of Jihadist swordsman, who in preparation for his entry into paradise would bind his testicles with wet rawhide, then dance around the fire for two or three days drinking a fermented concoction made from psychoactive plants, while the rawhide dried and squeezed. Once worked up to the proper pitch these warriors would go forth to the attack, and it was said that you could empty a .38 into one of them without noticibly slowing him down. (See Related Link below for an article on the Juramentados). So the .45 ACP (Automatic Colt Pistol) was adopted, and was supposedly guaranteed to bring down your man, even if you just hit him in the tip of his pinky finger.

The standard full metal jacket military ball ammunition had a truly massive 230 grain bullet. This developed a muzzle velocity of 830 feet per second, while it is claimed that the current M9 Beretta develops 1250 fps. However the Beretta bullet is much lighter. The "stopping power" of a particular round is a function of the weight of the bullet and its velocity No one ever doubted that the .45 ACP was a definite man-stopper, but there were great concerns among active military personnel at the time the Beretta was adopted about its relatively much less stopping power. The magazines of the Beretta do hold twice as many rounds and the M1911 Colt featured.

In WWII and Korea the M1911 Colt pistol used the same ammunition as the Thompson submachine gun and the M3 "grease gun" machine pistol, which was a factor easing supply concerns. These type concerns militated in favor of switching from the .45 ACP in the 1980s, as the US operated with its NATO allies, almost all of whom used the 9MM Parabellum ammunition utilized by the Beretta 9F. Such concerns had caused the US in the early 1960s to end its 60 year attachment to the .30-06 round in favor of the .308 NATO round for shoulder arms.

How many Army Casualties in Europe Area during World War 2?

Good Guestimate AnswerWe'll assume you're asking about the American Army which included the Army Air Corps (later the Air Force) during WW2. One commonly hears that 229,000 Americans died during World War Two. That is the ARMY figure, however. Overall American deaths (413,000, of which approx. 300,000 were combat deaths) were spread pretty much equally between the two theaters. We can assume, however, that Navy and Marine casualties were much higher in the Pacific while Merchant Marine and Army casualties were higher in Europe. Going with this information, I would surmise that the U.S. Army (again, including the Army Air Corps) probably lost about 120,000+ men in Europe during World War Two. My wife and I visited the D-Day museum in Caan, France in September, 2008. (The museum is spectacular.) In it, there is a plaque with the list of deaths by country. They are as follows:Allied PowersRussia 1,800,000France 1,375,800United Kingdom 908,371Italy 578,000Serbia 278,000Romania 250,000United States 114,000Belgium 38,716Central PowersGermany 2,033,700Austria/Hungary 1,100,000Turkey 804,000Bulgaria 87,500

Was the Nazi army a good army?

The Nazis never had an entire army of their own, but they had the German Army under their direction, and it was a very good army which was very difficult to beat. There is a tendency to confuse German and Nazi in World War 2, but not all Germans were Nazis, just as not all Americans are Democrats. In WW2 it was not even required that a German general be a member of the Nazi Party, and actually most of them were not.

Why did Kaiser Wilhem want a bigger navy?

Because Britain had the best one and they were the greatest empire in the world at that point. To get anywhere close to becoming as powerful as Britain, Germany would need a good navy, they already had a good army.

Which centerfire Pistol does Mikhail Nestruev use?

From an interview that Nestruev gave:Going into the standard pistol a little bit, since you have shot so many Feinwerkbau air pistols, Do you shoot the AW 93 as opposed to the IZH 35 (the Russian made gun that he the FWB is a copy of)?The sports pistol, you mean the FWB pistol as a small bore pistol? I have the original pistol from Russia, same as the FWB. It is a very good pistol and this pistol does a lot for the shooter. It's easy to shoot the pistol FWB or the Russian that's the same and I also was testing of course Walther pistols and all of them are good pistols, but they really don't compare or, compete with the last Hammerli pistol. I think that's also a good pistol. A very good pistol. For the standard pistol discipline I am the holder of the Russian record with the Hammerli (SP20).
