Those in the United States who supported the Vietnam War did so for various reasons. Many felt a Communist takeover of South Vietnam by the North would threaten our influence in the area of Southeast Asia. The presidents from Truman on believed in the containment policy developed during the Truman administration and the domino theory that said if one area fell to communism, the next area would fall, then the next, etc. We also did not want to allow the communist nations to get any of the Natural Resources in the area that we felt were necessary to our influence in the area. We also had a treaty, SEATO (Southeast Asia Treaty Organization), which was a defensive alliance obligating members to help when one was attacked.

The US was, under a treaty, supporting the government of South Vietnam. In an incident in the Gulf of Tonkin, a US ship was attacked North Vietnamese PT boats. This resulted in the US Congress granting the power to the President to escalate the war.

The Americans supported the vietname war because after the french faced defeat against the communism of Vietnam, the usa saw it nesseccary to take control, as they didint want communism spreading. As they saw it, even though the government at the time was corrupt in the south of Vietnam they were still non-communist. They thought that if they had no involvement in Vietnam, the domino theory would kick in. The Domino theory ment that once Vietnam had turned communist other countrys in south East Asia would soon follow

Because The North Vietmese were trying to turn South Vietnam into a communist country and when the North Vietmese had accomplished their communist spread they would attack other surrounding countries which would most likely start another world war and The US could not take that risk. Even though The US failed to stop the NVA (North Vietmese Army) the NVA never accomplished theirs either.

The Americans did not make war with Vietnam.

There was no Vietnam.

There were two countries: NORTH Vietnam and SOUTH Vietnam.

NORTH Vietnam attacked SOUTH Vietnam.

The US (Americans) defended SOUTH Vietnam.

The US never invaded NORTH Vietnam (the US bombed it though).

NORTH Vietnam invaded SOUTH Vietnam.

NORTH Vietnam was (and still is) a communist nation. The US was against communism.

The US did not and does not support Vietnam. It trades with it on the open market (free trade) like anybody else.

If you're asking about a "War" question, then which Vietnam are you asking about; North or South Vietnam?
