The 'Civilizing Mission' of colonizers meant the spread of western culture, thoughts, education, language, science and logic in the colonies. The French felt, like many Europeans, that imperialist expansion had a noble aspect too. They thought that it was the duty of the superior races to educate and civilize the people of Asia and Africa. Due to this, French established many schools in Vietnam, in which Science, Philosophy and French were taught. But this did not prove to be a successful idea and had adverse effect, as it spread western culture at the cost of local Vietnamese culture which was often laughed at by the colonizers.

In "Saving Private Ryan," Captain Miller's letter is addressed to the family of Private First Class James Francis Ryan. The letter is meant to inform them about the circumstances of their son's death and the sacrifices made during the mission to bring him home. The French set up an airbase in the mountains of Dien Bien Phu, Vietnam in a ploy to lure the Viet Minh (communist forces) there. The French ended up surrendering to the Viet Minh who used guerrilla tactics. The Viet Minh dug trenches, surrounding the French airbase and strategically assembled guns and fired at the French and incoming French planes who the French soldiers relied on for supplies such as food and water. This meant that the planes couldn't land and so the French were cut off from resources and outnumbered by Viet Minh who knew the land better and were more dedicated as they desperately wanted independence. The Battle of Dien Bien Phu ended with the Geneva Conference in which split Vietnam into two zones. North Vietnam was communist controlled and South Vietnam was non-communist controlled. Elections were also planned in 2 years to unify Vietnam however these elections were never held.
