Religion does not have to affect curriculum development in our schools, but in the wrong hands, it can. The risk is that fundamentalists will use their religious beliefs to prevent or delay topics such as evolution being taught properly. Some even claim that special creation, in one form or another, should be taught alongside or as an alternative to evolution.

The Discovery Institute's 'Wedge Document' was inadvertently leaked to the internet in 1999, placing its agenda for creationism in the public domain. One of the document's objectives was that at least two universities would teach so-called design theory as the dominant view within five years (by 2003), leading to intelligent design theory as the dominant perspective in science within twenty years (2019). It appears that these goals are not being met.

While the science of evolution is widely accepted in Australia, religion has affected the school curriculum in respect to the teaching of ethics. Advocates of religion say that children do not need to be taught ethics as long as they are taught religion. Gradually, ethics is being introduced as an option, and is highly popular with children.
