for a 9th grader, and someone fairly new to track, but overall in good shape.. your looking at under 70 seconds, faster if you are a male. Im a 10th grade female and iv'e only ran the 400 2 times, but my pr is 65 seconds.

Well it depends on your overall shape. An average time should be about 60 seconds for a 9th grader. Im 8th grade and thirteen, and i ran my 400 in a 57 seconds------ not i was only joking i get it in 2 mins 40 jk

It mostly depends on your shape and form. I'd say if your in good shape and have good form you should be able to get 59 or faster. I'm in 9th grade and my pr so far is 55.0

I'm not sure how old this question (and the answers are) but the info isn't at all accurate. From someone who is in the middle of the junior olympic circuit for track, and the father of a 10 year old girl who runs the 800m, I can offer some accuracy here.

First off, when you ask what's a good 800m time, I would start with what's good in elementary school meets around the country. In those races, a 3 minute 800m will generally win the race. When you compete regionally and nationally among the fastest 10 year old girls in the country, a 3 minute 800m isn't competitive. In those races, you'll see the very fastest 10 year old girls running 2:30. It should be noted that there are very few of these girls. Then between 2:35 and 2:40 are the next tier of runners. These girls are extremely fast, and arguably elite runners, but they're just a few seconds behind the truly fastest.

So a 3 minute 800m is quite good, but it's really relative to the level you want to compare it to.

Well, for a boy a better than average time would be like 58-59 seconds. For a 14 yr old girl a good time would be like 1:06-1:09 seconds.

The start for the 800m is a staggered start with lane 1 starting at the common finish line.

Basically, the 400 meter dash is one race around the track. Everyone is assigned a lane at the starting line, and after the pistol goes off, they must stay in their lane and run all the way around the track approximetely once.

My daughter is in fifth grade she is eleven she does a min nineteen she is best in her grade from girls. an excellent time for a first grade is one min 35 but for a four year old maybe two mins is really good.

My 5yr old girl did 1:57 at little athletics. I think this is good. She won by about 100metres. But thats about my only frame of reference. For all I know, they could have all been really slow?

It all depends on what the person running the dash prefers. I personally don't know how to use a block, so I just run it without it.

Blocks are highly recommended when running a 400m. Remember: it's a sprint. You don't see 100m dashers starting without blocks, so there's nothing different about starting blocks for the 400. If you don't know how to use blocks, you should really get some extra help from a coach or someone on the team who has experience. Using blocks will almost always cut down your time in any race.

The oldest man in the 400M was named Aeube Oshu who was 134 years old running a time of 38.23 seconds, leaving Micheal Johnson in the dust. The oldest women was named Dufar Oshnow who is 158 years old running a time of 157 years, 364 days, 23 hours, 59 muinites, and 59 muinites. It took almost her whole life to run this amazing race, she only had ONE second of free time in her life. Both of these old, incredible athletes deserve a lot of respect.
