Baseball teams in those days were usually owned and operated by individuals who regarded it as a business and the team was usually their main source of income. There was no TV and radio was still in its infancy, so almost all income for a team owner was generated by gate receipts. If the fans stopped coming, they were bankrupt.

As far as changes on the field, the biggest one was mandating that new clean balls were to be used whenever a ball was soiled or scuffed. Also, the spitball and variations of it were outlawed, except for those pitchers who had developed it and the outlawing of them too, would have destroyed many a pitching staff.

Probably from the Longhorn Bulls that reside in Texas. The Daily Texan's sports editor (and later editor), D.A. Frank, was the first to use "Longhorns" in the newspaper when referring to the Texas football team during the 1903 season. Prior to that point, the team had been known as "Varsity." Texas Varsity was sporadically referred to as the "long horns" by some Texas sports writers beginning in 1900. However, David Frank, Alex Weisburg (editor) and one other individual, made the choice to always refer to University of Texas sports teams as "Longhorns" and believed that if they used the name consistently it would eventually catch on with students, faculty and the alumni. By 1906, the name was official. "Longhorn" was chosen as a name because the particular breed of cattle was an integral part of Texas history and for many represented a unique tenaciousness, strength and individuality. For them, the Longhorn was symbolic of Texas and therefore appropriate for the University of Texas. An actual longhorn was presented in 1916 by Stephen Pinckney to the University of Texas to serve as a mascot. Longhorns were introduced to the longhorn during halftime of the Texas Longhorn versus Texas A&M football game. The Longhorns went on to win the game 22-7. That December, Ben Dyer stated in the Texas Exes Alcalde: "His name is Bevo. Long may he reign!" The following February, a group of Texas A&M students broke into the stockyard where Bevo was being held and branded him with "13-0," the score from A&M's 1915 victory over the Longhorns. Many A&M students have since told the fictitious story that the name "Bevo" originated with Longhorns attempting to alter the 13-0 brand. Bevo I was later served as the main course of the 1920 Longhorn football banquet. The A&M football team was invited to attend and was given the portion of the hide which still read "13-0." 107 years after Varisty being referred to as "long horns," the University of Texas Longhorns have one of the most distinctive mascots in college sports.

Yes--there's no limit to how many players can be substituted at once. Also, in the National League (or any league where pitchers have to bat) a team can make a "double switch", which in the case of a pitcher and catcher would result in the new pitcher batting in the previous catcher's spot in the batting order, and the new catcher in the pitcher's spot (probably ninth).

A 'no trade clause' is a section in a player's contract that specifies the player cannot be traded to another team or specifies the teams that a player can be traded to. Some players have in their contracts that they cannot be traded. This means the player will play the entire length of the contract for that team. Some players have in their contracts that they may be traded only to certain teams. For example, a player may say he can only be traded to the Yankees, Dodgers, or Red Sox but to no other team.

Jacoby Ellsbury changed his jersey number from 46 to 2. He says he's always worn this number since he was young but as a rookie in the Red Sox, he was too shy to ask bench coach Brad Mills for it. On October 27, 2009, Mills was named manager of the Houston Astros so # 2 became available. Jacoby requested the change and got it.

Good question. Generally speaking you have two different levels of baseball being play during Middle Schools. Most kids are playing Major Little League up until the age of 13. Which is generally up till the 6th grade. Once the kids are over 13 or the 7th grade they then play Junior Baseball. While a child is in the Majors the mound is 46 feet from home plate. Once they move up to the next level then the mound is 60 ft 6 in from home plate. Charles

Eat something with no carbs. Maybe fruit, mixed peanuts, pasta, or peanut butter and jelly. Maybe a 6" from subway would be nice. Don't go to Micky D's and get a Big Mac or a whole pile of food like Steak, green beans, and corn bread. I'd say maybe you could eat that 2-3 hours before the game.
