The old capital city Rio de Janeiro, and the economic capital Sao Paulo, are both at the edge of the country, in the South East. The Brazilian government wanted the political capital to be nearer the centre, so that it could represent the whole country rather than just a part of it.

So they built a whole new city for the job, and called it Brasilia.
