chess notation is the chess code. It is done on two axis. from whites perspective the file furthest to his left is the A file. The rank furthest t his left is the H file, and the files are numbered a b c and so on. The rank farthest away from white is the eighth rank. The rank closest to white is the first rank, and the ranks are numbered 1 2 3 and so on. The pieces in chess notation are given a letter, if i want to put my knight n the c3 square i would write Nc3 here are the letters and pieces : King: K Knight: N Bishop B Rook: R Queen: Q pawn: just write the square it is going to. The knight-piece symbolizes a mounted troop (such as calvary men or knights). It is capable of jumping pieces much like a horse could vault obstacles. Mounted soldiers could obviously travel greater distance then foot soldiers (pawns) hence the Knights movement of two up, however a mounted troop can't strike directly in front of themselves because the horses head is blocking them. So a horsemen would ride up slightly to the side of his target and strike them as they passed to the side hence the one over movement.

I can only assume that the pawn was missing before you sealed up the package. Did you set out or count the pieces before sealing?
