Chevrolets first V-8 was made in 1916 and they even sold a few in 1917. but, they weren't very efficient and weighed a lot so they were scrapped. The first mass produced Chevy V-8's wer introduced in 1955. They were 265 cubic inches and rated at 150 horsepower. Couple of little known facts about them. 1. They didn't use an oil filter. 2. They were so well made that they took forever to break in and owners complained because they used excessive oil. The fix. believe it or not was Bon Ami, a mild scrubbing powder. They put it in the oil to cause the engine to wear a little faster so the rings would seal. 3. They pumped oil up to where you would expect to find an air filter and used an oil bath to filter the air before it went to the carb. 4. The exhaust manifold on the left side dumped out the front into a tail pipe that wound it's way around to the other side. The reason they did that was to clear the steering box.

The big long number, on the back of the block, is a part number. The one you want to use is on the pad right in front of the drivers side cylinder head. This number will tell you everything you want to know about the history of the motor. Now on the back, if it is out of the car, just to the drivers side, on the bellhousing flange, you will see a letter, then 1, or 2 digits, followed by one more digit. The letter is the month. A is Jan., B is Feb., C is March, and so on. The next 1, or 2 numbers are the day of that month, and the last digit is the year.

If the block heater was factory installed (as it was in my GMC truck) the cord is tucked up with a zip tie right by the driver's side front wheel well.

I then re-routed the cord out around my grill, so I could plug in and not crush the cord in the hood.

You will get opinions both ways. Both manufactures make excellent vehicles today. Some people are brand loyal and only buy that brand and then bash the other brand even though they have never owned it. The vehicle that suits you is the one you should buy.

It will be written in small print on the side of the tire. It will also be written on a label in one of the door jambs. Go with the label.

The pressure written on the side of the tire is the maximum tire pressure the tire will safely hold and is not the pressure you should inflate the tires to. The correct pressure is written on the driver's door post as stated above.

What I have found through my research on this subject is that the 1955 smallblock V8 265 was a triumph of engineering because it "weighed less than the contemporary chevy six" 235. The all cast iron 265 V8 was around 550 lbs, so let's say that makes the 235 more, about 575 lbs. Then a wiki article I read said the new 230 six in the early 60's was a lighter design than the old 235, so maybe it is a little less that the 265 smallblock, around 500-540 lbs. The thing about a V8 is that the block is more compact than the long straight six, as is the crank, so obviously there is savings of weight in this respect, to counter having "two more cylinders of head" between the two heads on a V8. The SOHC pontiac 230 six just added aluminum housings above and to the side of the revamped 230 block and head, so I'm guessing the SOHC 230 was not superlight, again maybe 540 lbs. Everyone talked about the great handling of a Firebird Sprint or Tempest OHC, but I think that is compared to a heavier Pontiac V8. Chevy got their smallblock really light for what it was!

Ford engines, because ford castings are more even= less cracking better cooling, the exausts are seperate less head cracking from hot spots, the bolts dont go into waterjackets, chevy engines always mysteriously losing water somewhere,ford waterpumps pump about 27 % more water also shaped to flow smoother=better cooling also when road racing or towing, larger lifters= less cam wear, serious chevy racers rebore the lifter bore to use wider ford or dodge lifters when racing so they wont flatten the chevy cam lobes, ford and dodge dont use press in studs, ford uses bolts, dodge uses shafts, which chevy uses when they race, and i havent even mentioned cleveland 351 boss or 340 sixpack.
