You don't need to check for signs of life on an adult. Once CPR is started, continue until: 1) EMS arrives to take over; 2) An AED becomes available to hook up; 3) The scene bocomes unsafe & you need to evacuate; 4) The person shows signs of life & 5) You are too tired to continue.

CPR is preformed by Tilting the person's head back, And pinching there nose, Then breathing into there mouth two times. Then doing compressions on the person your doing CPR on's chest... And doing this until medical help arrives.

This depends on the company, and on the course. The length of the course will also generally reflect on the quality of the certification.

If possible, I would suggest you take a St. John Ambulance Senior First Aid course. This takes 2 days and is usually pretty inexpensive. This will qualify you to render first aid in a myriad of cirumstances, you will also get a first aid manual and a few bandages to take home (atleast this is true in Australia).

This is also valid for three years, and (in Australia) is nationally recognised by WorkCover and in the Australian training and accreditation system. (Only St John and the Red Cross are nationally accredited).

It does not matter if you are in Hawaii or Hackensak, it is all the same for Adults, Children and Infants the rate of compressions is 100 per minute.

As with adults, you do not stop CPR once you start to check for signs. The only reasons you would stop would be the following:

1. an AED is ready to use

2. another equally/better trained person can take your place performing CPR

3. the scene has become unsafe for some reason

4. the victim SHOWED signs of life

5. you become too tired to continue performing CPR

Rescue breaths are no longer generally in use. Rapid chest-pressure respiration is now recommended as being more effective.

But, if it turns out that you must do rescue breathing, blow a breath of air into the victim until her chest raises 2 inches or so, then immediately let the air out.

If you meant for how long to keep doing rescue breathing, you only stop when the victim starts breathing on his own, or you are just too exhausted to continue.

You can go to your local American Red Cross. The class is usually about 3-5 hours [depending on the instructor, and if you're looking for the full CPR/AED/First Aid certification]. After you complete the class you'll get your certification.

No; you can't use adult AED pads on a child under 8 years old or 55 pounds. You must use pediatric AED pads because adult pads will supply too much energy when shocking.

Remember the saying "white upper right, red to the ribs". This refers to pads as placed on the patient. If the colors are the same on the pads and leads, then follow the icons on the pads themselves for placement upper right and on the ribs. All AEDs I have seen in the last few years all have icons on the pads for placement location on the patient.

The brain can survive for up to about six minutes after the heart stops. The reason to learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is that if CPR is started within six minutes of cardiac arrest, the brain may survive the lack of oxygen. After about six minutes without CPR, however, the brain begins to die.

Conventionally, it was recommended that those who perform CPR on those who need it should do both chest compressions and rescue-breathing. Hands-only CPR involves only chest compressions and no rescue-breathing. Hands-only CPR is coming more into favor and has been shown to be just as effective as the former.

Please remember that you should not perform CPR on a person without a permit. Immediately dial your emergency number. Firstly, make sure the person is not breathing; make sure they can not wake up. Then tilt their head back, cover their nose, and breath into their mouth. Compress their chest, and repeat until breathing.

For an adult, compress the chest 1 1/2 to 2 inches.

Yes, you can loose your certification if you intentionally do CPR incorrectly.

Minimizing interruptions of compressions during CPR has been shown to improve outcomes in patients in Cardiac Arrest. Some means of minimizing interruptions include:

- Not stopping chest compressions to insert an Advanced Airway (generally not needed early in cardiac arrest)

- Providing 100 compressions per minute, pushing hard and deep, and allowing full chest recoil.

- Only performing pulse checks during rhythms analysis, typically at 2 minute intervals.

- Providing CPR while the defibrillator is charging, clearing the patient's chest rapidly for shock delivery, and immediately resuming chest compressions post shock without delaying for rhythm analysis.

An important part of minimizing interruptions during CPR is to ensure that high quality compressions are being performed at all times, switching compressors every 2 minutes is important to reduce rescuer fatigue.

Open the airway and check for breathing (signs of life; look, listen & feel); if not breathing give two breaths then start CPR.

Apply a bandage to both eyes.

If circumstances permit, and you are not certain the person is dead, you should continue CPR until: * They revive * You are relieved by someone at or beyond your level of competance * They are definiately dead (ideally pronounced by someone at the scene who can legally do that). * You cannot physicall continue. * The situation becomes dangerous and you must retreat. Things that are a sure signs of death are: * Onset of Rigor * Decomposition * Obvious extreme wounds not consistent with life. * The mechanism of injury plus the patient's condition * Chilling of core temp below 80F (there will be some variance on this -- join in). Note that there are documented cases of drowning victims in super-cold water recovering from very very long immersion times (see Diving Reflex).

30 compressions to 2 breaths for one rescuer and 15 compressions to 2 breaths for 2 rescuers (also use the two hands encircling thumbs position for 2 rescuers). The old compression ratio was 5 compressions to 1 breath.

You can however the real question would be if it will be enough energy to resuscitate an adult. Chances are probably not. The AED should have both of the sizes of pads inside of it. If not then it needs to be serviced by the Manufacturer.
