How do you know you have gestational diabetes?
Your blood is normally tested in the third trimester of your pregnancy. If the 1 hour test comes back normal, then everything is fine. If it comes back a bit high, they'll ask you to take a 3 hour test. This 3 hour test has 4 numbers: your blood sugar levels after fasting (before you drink the sugary test liquid), your blood sugar levels 1 hour after drinking sugar, after 2 hours and after 3 hours. If one number comes back over 179, then they say you have an abnormal glucose tolerance, and you have to quit eating sugar and watch your carbs. If two numbers come back over 179, then you have gestational diabetes and will be sent to an endocrinologist for instructions on what to do.
Can a diabetic drink scotch whisky?
Diabetics can drink champagne and other alcohol in moderation. Too much alcohol could cause sugar levels to go too low.
23,000 under 18s have diabetes in England But people get diabeties every day...
It may not go low enough for you to actually faint but can make you feel weak as a kitten. Other symptoms include but are not restricted to:
Short temper
Spots in front of the eyes
Shakiness
Sweating for no obvious reason
An overwhelming desire to complete whatever you are currently doing (seriously, it's weird like that!)
Adrenaline gets released when sugar levels drop and this can prompt the liver to start producing it's own glucose - hence high levels can often follow a really severe low.
None of these symptoms should be taken as a definite indication of low blood sugar in themselves: they have to be backed up by a blood sugar test. Test kits can be obtained from most, if not all, chemists for a really reasonable price. Continually low or high results need inspection by a doctor! Obviously! And if you're at all concerned then see a doctor anyway. The test for dodgy blood sugar levels is so simple these days that no medic can begrudge you!

What fruits can a diabetic have?
Fruit is good for most people but it can be a problem if you are diabetic.
If you are diabetic, fruit is something of which you need to be wary. Count your carbohydrates (this includes fruit) for each meal. You need to determine how many carbohydrates are safe for you (every diabetic is different) by testing your blood sugar, with your glucometer, one hour after each meal and then again two hours after the meal. Some people with diabetes can occasionally eat a little fruit. Other people with diabetes cannot eat any fruit at all. Never take risks, use your glucose meter to check, otherwise you risk your eyesight, your limbs, your kidneys, your heart, and your life.
What are the purpose of glucose test strips?
A glucose test strip is used in a glucose testing meter. They are used by diabetics to test the amount of sugar in your blood. The strips hold a small droplet of blood, and is then placed inside the meter to obtain a reading.
Why does thirsty occur with diabetes mellitus?
In the case of a Type 2 Diabetes (Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus - NIDDM) or Prediabetes (Impaired Glucose Tolerance - IGT), the pancreas produces little insulin or the body is unable to use the insulin that is present and therefore the cells cannot use these glucose in the body. Excessive glucose then starts to build up in the bloodstream and the kidney cannot filter all these extra glucose.
Two things will then happen:
Your body will send signals to your brain to drink more water to dilute the blood glucose / sugar levels back to normal.
The "extra" glucose escapes to the urine and thickens it and at the same time draws more water to help it flow through the kidneys. The extra water you drank eventually fills your bladder.
These will cause you to urinate more often and in larger amounts. In the end your body gets dehydrated and makes you feel extremely thirsty.
The cycle continues as your blood glucose / sugar levels are still high, your body will keep thinking you need more water and as you drink more water, you urinate more……a vicious cycle.
First off, it is "Glucosuria" without an "e" in it. Came directly out of my medical assistant text book I'm currently reading. Second off, glucosuria is high concentration of glucose in the urine which occurs in people with diabetes mellitus. Hope this clarifies things. If anyone one would like to add on to this they are more then welcome to:)
