Where can one buy blood glucose meters?

A glucose meter (or glucometer) is a medical device for determining the approximate concentration of glucose in the blood. It is a key element of home blood glucose monitoring (HBGM) by people with diabetes mellitus or hypoglycemia. A small drop of blood, obtained by pricking the skin with a lancet, is placed on a disposable test strip that the meter reads and uses to calculate the blood glucose level. The meter then displays the level in mg/dl or mmol/l.

Can a cat die of diabetes?

Definitely, and the proportion of cats with diabetes is rising from about 1 in 400 to closer to 1 in 50 (Source: Dr. Jacquie Rand, Queensland University).

If you are afraid your cat has diabetes, (because it's drinking and peeing a lot, and losing weight), then read as much as you can about how to care for it. It's actually possible to bring it totally back to good health given the right diet and insulin shots.

Diabetics need more protein in their diet because they must limit their carbohydrates. ?

Carbohydrates, such as bread, rice, potatoes, cake, pasta, chocolate, chips, cookies etc break down in the body to become sugars. ?When the body detects a lot of sugar in the blood stream, the pancreas pumps a lot of insulin into the system. If the carbohydrate is a 'bad' sort, a diabetic may feel shaky and eat a chocolate bar, which makes them feel better quickly. ?This effect is very temporary. In this case, the pancreas secretes too much insulin, as it counters the effects of the 'quick fix sugar' rush, so the diabetic very quickly feels shaky again and feels the need to reach for another carbohydrate rich snack to ward it off. ?This boom-and-bust cycle is harmful and dangerous.

Carbohydrates are not all the same. ?There are 'good' ones and 'bad' ones. ?The good ones take a long time to digest, so they keep the blood sugar level constant ?There is a lot of information available on the Internet about the different carbohydrates and how they can help everyone - not just diabetics - feel a lot healthier. ?Search for 'GI Index'

Also, a diabetic needs to have frequent, regular meals, although the portion size will have to be smaller if weight gain is to be avoided. ?Having frequent healthy snacks helps prevent the damaging boom-and-bust cycle. ?A good example of a mid morning snack would be an apple or some fat free yoghurt, a crispbread with low fat cheese spread or a handful of nuts.

So, to sum up:

A diabetic needs more protein because it keeps the blood sugar fairly constant and prevents feelings of hunger.

The diabetic needs to find out which carbohydrates are OK and which are best avoided, and the GI Index is a very helpful guide.?

Diabetics need breakfast, lunch and supper. ?But they also need mid morning, mid afternoon and bedtime snacks. ?A snack is a snack, not a full portion, or weight gain will be a problem. ?

Drink at least 4 glasses of plain water every day, as well as your other drinks such as milk, or unsweetened tea or coffee. ?Eat loads of green leafy salads in summer and vegetable soup in winter. ?Most fruits are fine if you actually eat the fruit itself and not juice it. ?Bananas are best avoided because they contain lots of sugars, but if you like them, have half a banana when you have someone to share it with you.? Eat your food as unprocessed and as natural as possible. ?

Now that food from all sorts of places are in our shops regularly, a diabetic diet need not be horrible or boring. ?Neither does it need to be expensive. ?Do your research, have fun and experiment!

Are glucose meters accurate?

The score recommended for your control solution will tell you how accurate it should be. For OneTouch machines their control solution should produce a reading of 5.5-7.5mmol so you know from that you should be within 2mmol of accuracy.

But it also depends where you do your tests. I got ranges of between 2.7 and 6.3 with four different blood tests within 5 minutes... one from each side of my palm on each hand. I know fingers are meant to be more 'accurate' in showing low/hypoglycemic scores than other body areas such as thigh (I think its only Lifescan that let you test on areas of your body other than finger though).

What are some healthy recipes for the diabetic consumer?

Why is the discovery of insulin by canadians so important?

The discovery of insulin made a near normal life possible for hundreds of millions of diabetics around the world.

Answer:

Prior to the discovery of insulin and its role in the body's use of sugar, diabetes was universally fatal. Once Banting and Best, the co-discoverers, identified insulin and its origin in the pancreas it was possible to determine if insulin from other sources control the disease. As a consequence millions of diabetics can live a normal life today. The fact that Banting and Best were Canadian is a source of pride for Canadians

Perhaps, alcohol will slightly lower glucose levels, but beer has some sugar in it. It is hard to measure in a sense since beer with pretzels is harder on the glucose then beer and a steak.

Answer

I am a type 1 diabetic and it is a fact that studies have shown alcohol lowers blood sugar. It is best NOT to drink if you are a diabetic however, if you are going to partake, I suggest always eat something that has both a protein and carb together like a sandwich or cheese and crackers when you do.I have found this to be helpful.

What are the subunits of insulin?

Insulin comes in various concentrations. 40U insulin means that there are 40U (or "units") of insulin in 1ml while 100U insulin means that there are 100 units of insulin in 1ml.

It should also be noted that insulin syringes come calibrated to the type of insulin they are to be used with, so you should never use a 40U syringe with 100U insulin, for example, without consulting your doctor for the correct dose with the mismatched syringe.

Diabetes mellitus is an inadequate secretion of insulin, causing blood sugar levels to rise. Excess glucose remains in the nephron creating an osmotic pressure that opposes the norm. Therefore water also remains in the nephron and is not absorbed.
