Flatworms

The phylum Platyhelminthes (aka flatworms) are rather primitive invertebrates that can be either parasitic or non-parasitic depending upon the species. They have no body cavity, no circulatory organs and no respiratory organs. Questions about flatworms can be asked and answered here.

What does the leopard flatworm eat?

What class do flatworms belong to?

They belong to any class that are under the phylum platyhelminthes.

Why does cutting a flatworm into pieces not kill it?

In gereral, the more poorly differentiated (the fewer complex structures that have specific functions) an organism is, the greater its ability to live and re-grow after being cut apart. Worms have this ability to re-grow in entirety, as do lower organisms like amoebas and fungi. In flatworms, their cells have the ability to differentiate into any type of tissue that the worm might need. These types of cells are called stem cells, and are the subject of ongoing research in medicine as to their applications in humans. There is a limit, however. a tiny slice of flatworm would not be able to develop into another worm.

How do earthworms play a role in the ecosystem?

earth worms and other members of PHYLUM ANNELIDA are different from other worms in that they are SEGMENTED meaning that internaly, earthworms separated into segments by a thin membrane called the SEPTUM. Earth worms are also known for their barrel shaped CLITELLUM -----------=----

that usulally covers segments 32-37. one more thing... earth worms have a CLOSED circulatory system, while most other worms have OPEN circulatory systems. hope this helps

What does a flatworm have inside its body?

Flatworms and Roundworms have bilateral symmetry as a body type.

Is a ascaris a flatworm?

Ascarids are not vertebrates; they are of the genus Ascaridae, parasitic nematodes generally thought of as intestinal roundworms. Parascaris equorum, the equine roundworm and probably the most common Ascarid, infects horses, donkeys, and zebras, but is not known to infect humans or other animals. Ascarids are usually species-specific -- Ascaris lumbricoides affects humans and causes the disease ascariasis while Ascaris suum infects pigs, but there is a possibility that these two species may cross-infect humans and pigs.

How do planaria get its nutrition?

A planaria obtains food by using eyespots and special "smelling" cells to locate food. Then the planaria inserts a feeding tube and releases digestive chemicals. Then the planaria sucks up the half digested bits of food. Lovely, isn't it!

Why are flatworms flat?

There is a special reason that flatworms are flat.

Because of their flatness the area of their 'body' is bigger (so a bigger surface area). Through this characteristic, they are able to diffuse more in and out of their endosystem.

Does flatworms digest their food?

It seeks out and eats other organisms.

What are feeding habits for a flatworm?

I wouldn't exactly say that they have a specific "niche".

They do play an important role in biochemical memory and stem cell research.

(Economical role)

They are VERY important for stem cell research because of their extreme rates of regeneration and their ability to regenerate even when cut up into shreds.

Hope this helps!

How does the gas exchange take place in flatworms?

worms carry out gas exchange by absorbing air through their skin

Do flatworms have hearts?

Roundworms do not have hearts, skeletons, nor blood vessels. Roundworms belong to the phylum Nematoda. This group contains different types of animals like the hookworm and pinworm.

What do flatworms have that sponges and cnidarians dont?

Flatowrms have muscle cells, they are a triploblastic phylum. They have endo, meso and ectoderm layers

Sponges are Parazoa and lack any true tissue at all

Cnidaria are diploblastic, having only endoderm and ectoderm
