The Chamorro people are the "true" indigenous people of the Northern Mariana Islands and Guam. They first arrived to the Marianas about 3500 years ago before the rest of Micronesia was settled from Southeast Asia. They were a tall, fair-skinned people of Austronesian stock. The Ancient Chamorro bloodline has long ceased since the completion of the Hispanicization of the Marianas resulting in a mix breed of Chamorro and Spanish. Later on, when Germans governed the Northern Marianas, some Germans such as the Hofschneiders lived with the Chamorros and began intermarrying with the local population. A few years later, the Empire of Japan had acquired the Northern Marianas as Mandate C islands after WW1 as a deal with Great Britain. As there was no choice for the now overwhelmed islanders, they had to accept Japanese culture and customs or face dire consequences. As a result, Japanese culture and language is prevalent in Chamorro culture today such as removing one's footwear before entering a home. Today, the modern Chamorro comes from a very diverse background compared to that of his/her ancestors. Ancient customs are still commonplace such as great respect for elders and the giving of gifts to relatives and friends.
