Ancient Egypt was based on the Nile River. The Fertile Crescent is born from the Jordan, Euphrates, and Tigris Rivers. Ancient Egypt, however, had many dealings with the Fertile Crescent Civilizations.

That time, was just the transition from picture writing to the sign and symbol font. The cuneiform writing actually began as a series of images, which was later forced into a series of wedges into clay. The major accomplishments of Mesopotamia, would be that there was so many great civilizations that had lived there at a point of time.
