Pain

Physical pain is a part of life. We all experience it, whether a scrape on the knee or a broken bone, receptors in our bodies sent pain signals all the way from our extremities to our brains. Here you might ask and answer questions about unexplained pain, what it could mean, and what to do about it.

Do Masochists actually like pain?

Some do, or, if they're sexually masochistic, they just pretend to for their partner. For some people masochism isn't related to being sexual at all (though for most it is). In daily life I find pleasure in the challenge of pain. The sensation itself still hurts, of course; it's not like we don't feel it. If something's too painful, we'll say 'ouch' just like any other person. Despite that, yeah, some people do actually enjoy the sensation of pain. I admit it is quite invigorating. And it's surprising how much a masochist can get to know themselves where other people can't. ;)

Does trigeminal neuralgia resolve itself?

No, it does not resolve itself. Trigeminal Neuralgia only gets worse with time and the damage is permanent. TN affects older people and women more often then men. Some of the best trigeminal neuralgia treatment options include creams, injections and surgery.

Is it possible for serious electrolyte imbalance to caise severe muscle and joint pain throughout the body?

I am not a doctor, but I believe I have issues with electrolyte imbalance. I notice that every so often I begin to get a pain that starts in my abdomen and slowly creeps up my chest and is most severe in my spinal column. I noticed that when I would take pain medications like (Tylenol, aspirin, etc.) it would make the pain worse. Sometimes it goes away when I drink more water, sometimes when I eat things with potassium. I wish there was an at-home testing device so that I could easily figure out what it is that my body needs.

The reason why I think that it's an electrolyte imbalance is the first time I ever felt that same pain was when I was once severely dehydrated at school. (we were on the 3rd floor in the summertime... the windows were broken and they refused to let us bring in waters.)

I sometime will get it when I have my period (it might be because hormones get all weird and so electrolyte levels get affected)

I had mentioned this pain to a pharmacist and she said that the same thing happened to her and not to take pain medication. I can't remember exactly but it either uses up electrolytes or water in your body, making the pain worse. She also said that that particular "pain" that I was feeling was my body taking water from my spinal column and using it in other areas more crucial. The result is the spaces between the spinal column have no "water cusion" and so are rubbing together resulting in the severe pain.

Once one of my friends was complaining to me that he was having severe back pain, and it wasn't a normal pain he was used to. It was sounding awfully familiar to the symptoms I have. It was a really hot day during the summer and I happened to ask him what he ate that day. He told me ramen noodles (which are loaded with salt). I told him to start drinking lots of water and hopefully it would flush out all that excess salt. He did and eventually started to feel better.

My thoughts of what's going on based on what info I've collected is:

Your body has a balance going on of electrolytes and water. You need water to survive, as well as electrolytes. The water doesn't go where it's supposed to automatically, the electrolytes tell it what to do and where to go. If you have too little electrolytes it can result in a siezure. In my case I believe that I'm taking in too much or too much of one type of electrolyte and it's causing an imbalance. Electrolytes can be sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium and I believe a couple of other things.

I tried to tell my primary care doctor that I think that I have an electrolyte imbalance, but she was rude and essentially thought I was crazy. I switched doctors, so hopefully I can see if my new doctor will at least give me a blood test or something to see if this is the case.

To me the pharmacist that told me she had the same symptoms and the same reaction to pain medication lets me know that I'm not crazy and maybe there's something to my constant battle of electrolyte imbalance.

Hi, my name is Barb and I wish to add to this Answer.

My 4 year old daughter has had mild to severe diarrhea off and on for 4 weeks. Seen by 4 different doctors and 3 different hopitals and clinics over this time. She has obvious electrolyte imblance, is week and generally looks like hell. As of late she's been unable to raise her right arm, limps with a walk and overall is weak/sore upon movement. After discussion with the doctor it was decided that I up her intake of foods higher in potassium and continue give her Pedialyte electrolyte and fluid replacement. She is improving slowly now. (we are also waiting on tests to help determine her problem). My opinion is that YES, electrolyte imbalances can cause muscle weakness.

Does cold water relax muscles and limit pain?

That really depends on the preference of the individual, and the underlying cause of the muscle soreness. If the soreness is a result of over doing it from exercise, and is not from an injury, heat could be the way to go, as it dilates the blood vessels and brings more blood into the area, as well as promoting muscle relaxation. Cold should always be used if you suspect an injury, as it prevents swelling, and swelling is a result of histamine response to the injury. K.Jones LVN/Combat Medic

How can you tell when someone is addicted to pain killers?

The pain killers in your medicine cabinet might start disappearing and things might go missing from your home. The things that go missing are most likely being sold for money to buy more pain killers. I am in seventh grade and have to do a project on pain killers. I am a strait A student but I don't know much, I just started researching hope I could help!

A few other signs:

-Check their pupils. If they are unusually constricted (pin-point) that's a good way of knowing that they're currently high on pain killers.

-If they're unusually chatty, laughing a lot, cracking jokes, and start randomly opening up and talking about things they normally wouldn't talk about. They can also seem very loving and a lot happier than normal. During the beginning stages of addiction, it gives the user energy and motivation to clean and get things done. They may become much more focused on tasks at hand, and much more interested in things that normally wouldn't be interesting or funny to them.

-Sudden financial problems. If they are suddenly complaining about not having any money or constantly asking you if you have a few bucks to spare, that's a good indication that things are starting to become dangerous.

-If they seem to be nodding off, slurring words, or not making sense. They may seem a little 'off.'

-A gradual change in behavior. This is also an indication that things are starting to spiral out of control for the user. If suddenly your friend, lover, offspring, sibling, etc. seems to start isolating themselves from activities and loved ones, this is a sign that they are either going through withdrawal, don't have enough pills to 'last them through the day,' or they just plain don't feel like it. Excuses to watch for: if they are suddenly constantly claiming they feel as though they are starting to catch a cold, or if plans were made days earlier and they were all for them, then suddenly 'something came up' is also a warning sign and a lie.

During the withdrawal stages, this is a very serious point in the addict's life. This is when they must make the choice to stay clean or just detox and 'only use occasionally.' Unfortunately, it is impossible for an addict to have 'self-control.' They will always want to push the envelope and say "screw it, I'll just do one more," or, "I'll be okay, I'll just use one more time this week." It doesnt work. It's true, once an addict, always an addict. The addict has very little self-control when it comes to pills because they are so powerful, they actually change your brain chemistry over time (thankfully though, if the user hasn't been overdoing it or using for TOO long, it is reversible). This leads to the addict relying entirely on pills to 'just get by.' Once they are broke and can no longer afford their pill of choice, they will either quit, go to heroin, or feed the addiction with other pills just to feel normal.

Signs of withdrawal/a serious addict who feels as though they "cannot quit" include:

-Decreased work ethic. Meaning, if were previously constantly on time to work and "kicking ass", then suddenly calling off work all the time, or moping around moving very slowly and in need of a bathroom break every 15 minutes, they are going through withdrawal. Also, again, try to notice their pupils. If they are unusually dilated (large), they are going through withdrawal. Also, their appearance will look absolutely wretched, because during withdrawal, the addict cannot sleep. If kept up enough, this will eventually lead to a sudden loss of job.

-Not caring about what they look like anymore. If they come into work or visit you while looking a hot mess, when they normally never do, is a good sign they are in trouble.

-Complete isolation. If they ignore you altogether without warning, especially after being so talkative and chipper, this is a warning sign.

-Sudden random increase of irritability

-Unusual defensiveness

-An "empty" look in the eyes that once seemed to "sparkle" with life

-Someone who seems to be suddenly bi-polar, going through ups and downs. This is an indication that the user can only afford drugs on certain days, or their dealer(s) cant get them their fix, so they must go through withdrawal until they can get their hands on something, anything. This symptom, however, only applies if most or all other symptoms above apply.

-If they ask you questions about pain killers or start talking about 'someone they know' who does pain killers. This may be an indication that they are subtly trying to call out for help, especially if they seem to have been experiencing the signs and symptoms stated above.

-Noticeable weight-loss (Again, only applies if most or all other symptoms apply).

One thing to take in account: If the user is addicted to opiates ONLY, there is no risk of death during opiate withdrawal, unless the user has a serious heart/medical condition. However, if they have been using Xanax, Ativan, Valium, or any other benzos for an extended period of time and they're addicted to benzos as well, that is when things become serious. Benzo withdrawal can lead to seizures or death.

If you suspect someone you know is addicted to pain killers, PLEASE confront them before it's too late. There are Methadone clinics, as well as a pill called Suboxone, which is actually recommended over Methadone, as Suboxone is easier to get off of than Methadone. However, Methadone clinics may be more suitable financially, since Suboxone is still a relatively new drug, and there are no generic versions available. A prescription for Suboxone is very pricey, even with insurance, and only certain pharmacies may carry it. Please assure them that you are there for them and want to help. If the addict sees that you are going to support them and still love them, they will be much more willing to comply, get help, and get clean :)

What is wrong with your friend she enjoys pain?

That depends on exactly what situations you are finding her enjoying pain. It may not be what it appears at first. If she really likes you then she may just be putting up with the pain as a minor annoyance which is worth it if she gets you attention. All you have to do is ask her.
