The Great London Smog (SMoke + fOG) was the result of coal smoke from fired heating during an unusual cold period combining with the heavy fogs of London. Although smog was not uncommon in London this was an unprecedented event, it lasted from Friday 5 December to Tuesday 9 December 1952. The coal smoke contained sulfur dioxide ans a well as organic (coal tar) compounds which made the mixture acidic and resulted in breathing problems for many. About 4,000 people were known to have died as a result of the fog, this estimate could be considerably loweer than the actual number.

This is an immensely complex question because it depends on "for who?" For example, read the following paragraph (an earlier answer):

Smog. It can blind you, crash your car, cause respiratory problems, kill ozone, cause fumes in your car engine, make you late for work, and be quite a pain. Smoke and fog = smog.

For that person smog was the worst. For someone living next to a coal driven electric plant, that might be the worst. For each person there is a worst, depending on the person's circumstances. A crucial question is: what is the worst for mankind?? Another: what is the worst for the biosphere as a whole? Another: what is the worst for the planet?

The planet and biosphere can be considered as a pair, supporting each other, protecting each other. Pollution which damages the biosphere threatens both biosphere and planet. Examples would be global cooling, global warming, food chain destruction such as loss of a major pollinator, ozone layer damage, etc.

The seriousness would depend on the position in the biosphere where the hit occurred, the amount of biosphere attacked, and the duration of the attack. For example, a pollutant killing ocean krill by a very long-lived pollutant distributed over our major oceans could bring our entire biosphere down. Pollutants destroying major pollinators could likewise bring the biosphere down. The more resistant the pollutant is to biodegradation, the more trouble it bodes.

Perhaps we can say, the more there is of a pollutant the worse, the lower it targets the food chain, the worse, the wider its dissemination the worse, the longer its life the worse.

There is in nature a Water Cycle that cleans and refreshes all water by evaporating the water from all things... because all things have water in them.

Then, the evaporated water is rained down onto all parts of the Earth and goes through a freezing process in the mountains before thawing into rivers and the ground full of energizing minerals.

Even if the humans pollute as much as they can, the Earth will naturally clean and restore the water to healthy state because the Earth's ecology is stronger and has more stabilizing potential than all the destructive pollution humans can put out there.

The pressure in the newly installed cap is not as high and consistant as it has been expected to be and there are fears of a leak somewhere along the pipe on the ocean floor, so the test has been extended to double check for no leaks and be safe rather than sorry.

Natural processes will eventually remove air pollutants, if we stop inputting them at such massive levels. The prospect of removing air pollutants is interesting and seems favorable, but is ultimately myopic. What happens even if we can suddenly remove pollutants from the air? Where can we put them? In the ground? This would undoubtedly engender new issues. No, the question is not how to remove air pollutants, but how to live without producing them.
