What does times earnings mean in stocks?
I'm not sure if I fully understand your question. If you mean that a stock is trading "at five times earnings" this means that the price of this stock is five times as high as reported or future earnings of the company. This ratio is calles Price-to-earnings ratio and is a measure for the valuation of a stock. The lower the P/E the cheaper is the stock. The valuation also depends on popularity of the stock, the company's earnings growth and the industry it operates in. I've already answered this question. How do you invest in Penny Stocks?
Investing in penny stocks works just the same as investing in any other stock. You buy the stock using its symbol Example: XYZ is the symbol for Xray Yellow Zoo Inc. (company is not real)
You open up an account with a broker that does not penalize you for investing in microcap or penny stocks, place a "limit buy" order for that symbol and determine the number of shares you wish to buy. When the time is right to sell, you place a "limit sell" order indicating the number of shares you wish to sell.
Remember, penny stocks are highly volatile, meaning that their price can move up or down by leaps and bounds in a short period of time, this is not the case with all penny stocks, just the ones that are worth your investment.
What are the major factors that determine the value of a firm's stock?
The price of a firm's stock is determined by the market - what are people willing to pay for it. You might consider things like Net Book Value and Price/Earning ratio; but you also have to consider other business conditions: Has the company just secured a valuable patent or trademark that has not produced any income yet? Are they suceptible to other market trends (good or bad) such as mortgage companies feeling the impact of a declining real estate market. And don't ever confuse a good product with a good company - a poorly managed company will fail regardless of their products. A stock is considered over valued if the combined market price of all the company's shares is above the expected future value of the company, and it is considered undervalued if the combined market price of all the company's shares is below the expected future value of the company.

Options selling at prices higher than their exercise values?
Option value is composed of two components : Option value = Intrinsic value + time value Intrinsic value is the amount by which the option is in the money and given by the formula Max (0, S-X) Time value of option - this value depends on the time until the expiration date and the volatility of the underlying instrument's price. The time value of an option is always positive and declines exponentially with time, reaching zero at the expiration date. If the option is out of money its intrinsic value will be 0 but will still have time value of money and hence options sell higher than their exercise price.

What does beta mean in reference to mutual funds?
Answer
beta
A quantitative measure of the volatility of a given stock, mutual fund, or portfolio, relative to the overall market, usually the S&P 500. Specifically, the performance the stock, fund or portfolio has experienced in the last 5 years as the S&P moved 1% up or down. A beta above 1 is more volatile than the overall market, while a beta below 1 is less volatile.
general market fluctuations, which affect all the securities present in the market, called market risk or systematic risk, second, fluctuations due to specific securities present in the portfolio of the fund, called unsystematic risk. The Total Risk of a given fund is sum of these two and is measured in terms of standard deviation of returns of the fund.Systematic risk, on the other hand, is measured in terms of Beta, which represents fluctuations in the NAV of the fund vis-Ã -vis market. The more responsive the NAV of a mutual fund is to the changes in the market; higher will be its beta. Beta is calculated by relating the returns on a mutual fund with the returns in the market. While unsystematic risk can be diversified through investments in a number of instruments, systematic risk can not. Also read http://www.mutualfundplan.com/2008/08/measurement-of-risk-return-in-mutual.html for more details about various Risk measurement tools..
