Who was invited to the first Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving is traditionally associated with the Pilgrims, who were Christian separatists from England and had come over on the Mayflower. Because the Native Americans known as the Wampanoag indians showed the colonists how to plant, fish and hunt, they played a crucial role in the survival of the colony. The Wampanoag were therefore invited along to the feast, which lasted three days.

However, another version says the first Thanksgiving was celebrated on 8 September 1565 in what is now Saint Augustine, Florida. In this scenario, Spanish explorer Pedro Menendez de Avilesinvited the Timucua Indians to a celebratory meal in St Augustine in 1565 after a thanksgiving Mass celebrating his and his crew's safe arrival.

A third "First Thanksgiving" story has it as being essentially religious in nature, without any feasting involved. On 4 December 1619, a group of settlers from England arrived at Berkeley Plantation on the James River, now known as Charles City, Virginia. This group dedicated this day of their arrival as a Day of Thanksgiving to God.

When did the Pilgrims and Indians have the Thanksgiving meal?

After their first harvest, the colonists of Plymouth held a celebration of food and feasting in the fall of 1621. Indian chiefs Massassoit, Squanto and Samoset joined in the celebration with ninety of their men in the three-day event. This is said to be the first North American day of Thanksgiving. On October 3, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation calling for the observance of the fourth Tuesday of November as a national holiday.

What US president made Thanksgiving a national holiday?

President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day during the Civil War, on October 3, 1863.

He asked that the nation give thanks for the Union on the last Thursday of November. That made the first true national autumn Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 26, 1863, recognizing a long-standing New England tradition of placing the holiday on the fourth Thursday in November.

He did it partially to help soothe the national mood, which was weary of the Civil War. He declared Thanksgiving again for November 23, 1864. In 1865, his successor, Andrew Johnson, declared a Thanksgiving for December 7, 1865, and presidents traditionally declared a Thanksgiving for every autumn since. (Andrew Johnson was the first to give government employees the day off, making it a legal holiday.)

In 1941, Congress passed a bill, and FDR signed it, that fixed the date as the fourth Thursday in November. FDR attempted to move the holiday to the third Thursday in November, but Congress enacted a law to fix the date at the fourth Thursday in November, thus making it an "official" holiday. On November 26, 1941, FDR signed the bill.

Is it true that Christians can not celebrate Thanksgiving?

No, that is not true at all. Thanksgiving is at least as "Christian" a holiday as Christmas itself is. In the original the "thanks" in question were being "given" to God.

Some sects operate under a sort of generalized "all holidays are bad" umbrella belief, and as such do not celebrate Thanksgiving. However, it's definitely peculiar to a few sects rather than being a common Christian belief.

Is this generation the laziest?

That depends if you are talking about the current generation of parents or of children. In my 30 something generation, I have seen a good deal of my fellow parents falling down on the job. It is too much trouble to properly discipline, so they just turn a blind eye or take the path of least resistance. They want their kids to have more then they did, but they don't want to take the time or trouble of having the child earn it. Things are just handed to them. A generation is not born one way or another. They are shaped into what they are. On the other hand, there are still plenty of good parents and children out there. It is generally not looked well upon to put one type of people into a group and judge them all the same. If you are not careful, it quickly becomes discrimination.

Which Wampanoag chief attended the first Thanksgiving at Plymouth Colony?

Massassoit [c. 1581-1661] was the Wampanoag Chief who attended the first Thanksgiving at Plymouth Colony. He had made himself well known to the Pilgrims. He headed the Pokanoket indians, who were members of the Wampanoag Confederacy. He was concerned about the Pokanoket rivals, the Narragansett. He didn't want the Narragansett to benefit from Pilgrim presence in the area. So he concluded a friendly treaty with the Pilgrims on March 22, 1621. That's why he was happy to be invited to the Thanksgiving celebrations. And that's also why the Pilgrims were happy at the Chief's acceptance.

How may Indians came to the first thanksgiving?

What is the history of Thanksgiving in United States? The initial "Thanksgiving" feast, held in 1621, was really a traditional English harvest celebration. The Pilgrims shared it with the Native Americans because they had taught the colonists to plants crops and hunt wild game. Without the Native Americans, the Pilgrims may not have survived the harsh winter and been able to celebrate their first harvest of plentiful crops in the New World. The colonists' first harvest feast lasted for three days. Food was served all at once, instead of in courses, so people ate whatever they pleased in the order that they desired. The more important members at the feast were given the best pieces of meat, while the rest of the diners ate whatever was closest to them. Since the Pilgrims didn't use forks or plates, they ate their meal straight off the table with spoons, knives or their fingers. They used large napkins to wipe their hands and also wrapped it around food when it was too hot to hold
