What did Abigail Adams need?

She was an interesting woman. Her husband, John Adams, was gone much of their marriage. At first he was involved as the lawyer for the British troops put on trial for the Boston Massacre. He was part of the Congress and was in France. They had a farm outside Boston in a place called Bainbridge and she managed the farm along with 6 children. Two of her children died before the age of 2 years old. From her farm she watched the Battle of Bunker Hill and when she wrote John asking him what to do if the British troops came to the farm he told her to take the children and hide in the woods. One of the things about the Adams marriage is that she shows in her letters a sharp intellengence and she stresses to John he needs to help push for women's rights. This was a rare thing in her time and to have a husband who took her advice into account was also unusual. As the wife of a Vice President and President she also had to learn the new politics of her time. Martha Washington held a open house one day a week and then Abigail was required to pick a day for her open house. Washington and Adams didn't like each other so the relationship between the women was fairly cool and as the president's wife Martha ruled the social calendar. After Adams retired from politics husband and wife were able to spend a few years on their farm. He did keep writing about government and was somewhat involved.
