Adam and Eve

The account of Adam and Eve is one of the world's best known creation stories. It also serves as the basis for three major world religions: Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. Typical questions by contributors include the story's relationship to other religious writings, parallels with other creation stories, impacts on world art and literature, and collaboration by science.

Did Adam and Eve have a date?

Yes, Adam and Eve were married to each other. God brought them into existence to lead out their lives together. Their marriage ceremony was referenced in Genesis 2:24. In that verse, Adam set the responsibility of husbands to leave their parents and become one with their own wives.

I do not believe this answer to be correct, just a response. You cannot read between the lines. If the god of the bible knows all, he would have mentioned marriage as not to cause any confusion. Also see Joshua 10-13 and Rev. 7.1 and you'll see where the writers of the bible are wrong.

What type of tree is the tree of knowledge of good and evil?

The tree of knowledge of good and evil is materialistic wisdom, it is earthly:

Jam 3:14

But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth.

Jam 3:15

This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic.

What was eves punishment?

Eve would have to multiply and bear pain at childbirth.

What are the conflicts in the book of genesis?

Gen 1 says in the beginning there was nothing seas raged over the land etc...Gen 2 says that there was nothing and the earth was desolate cos God hadn't sent rain yet - contradicition

Gen 1 says God created it in 6 days.

commanded let there be light - day one was day and night.

day two, sky.

day three, separated earth and sea.

day four = sun moon and stars.

day five = animals.

day six = god made humans in his image. gave them power over the animals and produced grain and stuff for them to eat.

Gen 2 gives no timescale. it also has a different order. God created Adam from soil, then made light and the garden of eden. then he decided that Adam needed a companion so created all the animals. none were suitable so he put Adam into a deep sleep, removed a rib and created eve. - contradiciton.

Second answer: There is no contradiction.

Don't Genesis 1 and 2 present contradictory creation accounts?

  • Genesis 1
    • Day one - Heavens and earth are created. "Let there be light." Day and Night.
    • Day two - Atmospheric waters separated from earth waters.
    • Day three - Land appears separating the seas. Vegetation is made.
    • Day four - Sun, moon, stars are made.
    • Day five - Sea life and birds are made.
    • Day six - Land animals, creeping things, and man (male and female) are made.
  • Genesis 2
    • States heaven and earth were created. There was no plant yet on earth, no rain yet, and no man. But, a mist rose watering the surface of the ground. Then the Lord formed man from dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life. Finally, God made Eve.
There is no contradiction between Genesis 1 and 2. Genesis 1 is a detailed explanation of the six days of creation, day by day. Genesis two is a recap and a more detailed explanation of the sixth day, the day that Adam and Eve were made. The recap is stated in Gen. 2:4, "This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made earth and heaven." Then, Moses goes on to detail the creation of Adam and Eve as is seen in verses 7 thru 24 of Gen. 2. Proof that it is not a creative account is found in the fact that animals aren't even mentioned until after the creation of Adam. Why? Probably because their purpose was designated by Adam. They didn't need to be mentioned until after Adam was created.

How many years passed from the creation of Adam and Eve until Noah's ark?

No one knows- there is no historical or archeological evidence that would make it clear. However it is known that the Black sea was formed by a major flood event when the Mediterranean sea burst through what is now the Bosphorus. An approximate date for this has been calculated as 5600 BC. This shattering event may well have been what formed the basis of the Flood story in Genesis.

Did Adam and Eve have any children before they were thrown out of Eden?

No.

Gen:3:24: So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

Gen:4:1: And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.

Did God forgive Adam and Eve?

he doesn't show forgiveness to them but he does have mercy on them. he curses the ground instead of adam and gives eve and her descendants power over the snake who tricked her. however god sticks with his word and adam and eve both die (although not right away). he also offers a redeemer to come through the human lineage to restore the humans to god.

Did lucifer rebel against God before Adam was created?

The Book of Genesis never mentions Lucifer, who is a Christian creation, in fact a Christian misinterpretation of Isaiah chapter 14, perceived as describing the fall of Satan. However Lucifer ("morning star") was a mocking reference to the hated king of Babylon. This was misunderstood and taken out of context by later Christians to refer to Satan. Nor does the Book of Genesis ever mention Satan, who was never mentioned in any biblical writings from before the Babylonian Exile. Nevertheless a majority of Christians probably perceive the serpent, or snake, who tempted Eve to be the embodiment of Satan. Another view is that the snake was a remnant of earlier animist beliefs and was a common motif in ancient Near Eastern religion.

The story of the creation of Adam and Eve says that all the animals were created after Adam, but before Eve. On this reading of the Bible, the serpent, or Lucifer, was not in the Garden before Adam, but was there before Eve.

What did God put at the entrance to the Garden of Eden to prevent Adam and Eve from coming back in?

Other answers from our community

because they didn't listen to god when he told them not to eat from the tree of knowledge.(Genesis 3:17-24)

Answer

Actually Adam and Eve were expelled from the garden called Eden because they had made themselves impure and unworthy. Eve and her husband both partook of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (The serpent ... Satan ... Revelation 12). They had become deceived by what they learned by this serpent.

Therefore they were now tainted and not worthy of being around Christ (the tree of life).

They were punished for their sins which included being expelled from the garden and the presence of Christ. The presence of Christ has been explained by many NDE as a radiance of pure and unending love.

This rivalry between the Serpent and Christ you will find documented in many biblical texts, Christ is documented as to have defeated the Serpent by the Apostles. Revelation 12 will provide insight as to the 1/3 of all souls which were deceived by the Serpent in the 1st earth iteration. 2nd Peter Ch 3 will define all 3 reiterations of this earth which are to occur.

Who had first bite Adam or eve?

Eve ate the fruit first , and then tempted Adam it it as well.

What was the name Adam and Eve's garden?

The garden had no name. It was planted by God in Eden. Eden was the name of the land that was to the east of where God created the first man, Adam.

Who were the first people on earth except Adam and Eve?

If you want names, that is impossible. [Note that this is an earth sciences question and not a religion question] The best evidence indicates that humans arose in central Africa very roughly 200,000 years ago.

What kind of clothing did Adam and Eve wear?

What we can say about Adam and Eve is that there is no record of how they looked, but one thing is very clear both missed their childhood.

What is the first original sin committed by Adam according to the bible?

I guess it was the "not listening to God" since he told them not to eat (although his significant other was the one to make him, but that doesn't make it less bad)

Answer:

"Sin" is the "breaking of the Ten Commandments" [see I John 3:4 & Rom.7:7].

Therefore, the original transgression Adam and Eve committed was: "Thou shalt have no other gods before Me."

They chose to heed and obey "that old Serpent," ["...called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world..." - Rev.12:9] -- as their "master," thereby "worshiping" him and becoming his servants.

"Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?" (Rom.6:16)

ANSWER

The first original sin involved more than just eating a piece of fruit after being told not to. By eating from the tree of knowledge of good and bad Adam and Eve were asserting their independence from God. Instead of simply obeying God they would decide what is good and what is bad and act accordingly. Take for example the fact that after eating the fruit they realized they were naked and became ashamed. Why? They were naked the whole time before now after eating the fruit they feel ashamed of being naked. The fact is there is nothing wrong with nudity or God would of clothed both of them after they were created. Jeremiah 10:22 states it does not belong to man who is walking to even direct his step.

What happened to the Tree of Knowledge after Adam and Eve ate the apple?

Its just a story in an old book of mythology. The answer to your question is the same as the answer to 'what happens to Charon after you cross the river Styx.' The answer is Charon is a myth, the same as Adam and Eve and the tree are myths.

What is the symbolism in Adam and Eve hiding from God?

When Adam and Eve sinned, their eyes were opened to their naked state. It's been said that they had been formally covered by glory in their innocence and that covering was lost. Realizing they were naked, they sought to cover themselves, and so used fig leaves to try to create clothing. While the act of sin caused the immediate beginning of death in their bodies (what we think of as aging), the concept of death was still unknown to them. Moreover, while they knew they had done wrong, they did not know how it would need to be made right. God had to kill animals to create clothing in symbolism of the fact that blood is needed to pay for sin. This is a foreshadowing of Christ's blood on the cross covering all of man's sin. One common interpretation is that this is a symbol of man trying to cover his sins himself. It doesn't work long-term. God had to step in.

What were the names of the rivers in the garden of Eden?

Genesis chapter 2 says that a river flowed through the Garden of Eden and that it had four tributaries, Pishon, Gihon, Tigris and Euphrates.

The Tigris, and Euphrates flow down through Iraq in western Asia, or the Middle East.

The Bible says that the Pishon flowed to the north, although no such river is known to us.

The Bible says that the Gihon flowed through Ethiopia, in the African continent, although no such river is known to us.

A single river can not have tributaries in two continents, so there are real problems with the story of the Garden of Eden and its four rivers, two of which may never have existed. Leon R. Kass (The Beginning of Wisdom: Reading Genesis) says that the Garden of Eden is a purely mythic place.

Did Adam and Eve hunt dinosaurs?

One answer from our community:

Most indeed they did, There are many references in the bible about dragons. Many think that dragons were a myth however that is only because the term dragon is what we know now as dinosaur. The term dinosaur only arrived in the 1800's. Prior to this they were known as dragons, and every great culture in humanity has a reference to them. Most dating back within the last few thousand years, which would lead to believe that not only did Adam and Eve walk with dinosaurs, it was not long ago that many dinosaurs were around, as apposed to the few species that remain.

Since Dinosaurs are land creatures, they were created on the same day of all the other land animals, so that would mean that Adam and Eve did live with dinosaurs. How they became extinct I don't know.

Another answer from our community:

Dinosaurs are an archaeological reality, Adam and Eve are a religious metaphor. They aren't even a part of the same reality, let alone the same time period.

Dinosaurs became extinct about 65 million years ago. Adam and Eve were supposed to have lived about 6 to 7 thousand years ago. (about 4000 BC) They would have never met.

Assuming dinosaurs ever existed they would have been part of creation and would have been contemporaries of Adam and Eve. There is no record that Adam and Eve actually saw dinosaurs; they may have lived in different parts of a very empty planet.

Another answer

The second answer seems to be a creationist answer. Many inconsistencies seem to have been found in creationist stories.

"There is no evidence that Adam and Eve saw dinosaurs" (see above)

Dinosaurs were not known or discovered until about 1882 with Dorson and Owen. Since they were not known they were not put into the Bible which was written long before dinosaur bones were discovered.

Another answer

Ancient Hebrew did not have the word 'dinosaur' but it did describe a number of creatures considered by many to be types of dinosaur such as the Leviathan and the Behemoth.

By simple and logical analogy Adam and Eve certainly walked with dinosaurs and with Lions as well and snakes and spiders and other dangerous creatures without harm.

Further Opinion: Most certainly Genesis 2: 20 includes a list of the groups of animals which Adam named. This evidently does not include dinosaurs. Cattle are not dinosaurs. The 'fowl of the air' are not dinosaurs either (even thoughthey descended from the dinosaurs). 'Beasts of the field' is a clear reference to domesticated creatures used by man for agriculture. These clearly were not dinosaurs either.

Although this is a somewhat different issue, Adam clearly in this instance was not required to name every single species on the planet. Nor do we have one single actual name recorded of any of the creatures that he named. If we follow the logic through then all cattle, birds and beasts of the field do not exist because the names which Adam gave them are not recorded. This conclusion would seem to be somewhat difficult to arrive at.

Dinosaurs were certainly created by God only days before Adam or else they evolved and were extinct (although this is difficult to prove given the history of the Coelacanth and the Wollemi pine)as is presumed, around 65 million years ago. These two positions are clearly and irrevocably incompatible. What is unnecessary is to draw false conclusions from the Bible account. There are literally thousands of things, probably millions of things which the Bible does not record which everyone knows exist, including people who believe the Bible. No-one who believes the Bible doubts that anything does not exist simply because it is not mentioned in the Bible. This is a straw-man argument.

Adam and Eve were made up my Moses from Egypt, it is just a story.

Get real...Adam and Eve did not exist...it's all made up by those darn sheep herders, and Moses was made up too.

Carbon dating and the 40 or so other dating methods we now have are proven totally and line up beautifully when cross checked. The real world realizes that the Bible is just myths mixed up with some real names and places. It is a man-made prehistoric artifact...as is all religions.

§ Dendrochronology - for dating trees, and objects made from wood, but also very important for calibrating radiocarbon dates

§ Thermoluminescence dating - for dating inorganic material including ceramics

§ Optically stimulated luminescence or optical dating for archaeological applications

§ Potassium-argon dating - for dating fossilized hominid remains

§ Archaeomagnetic dating - Clay lined fire hearths take on a magnetic moment pointing to the North Pole each time they are fired and then cool. The position of the North Pole for the last time the fire hearth was used can be determined and compared to charts of known locations and dates

§ Magnetic Properties of Lead used to establish dates. Chemistry Professor Shimon Reich, a specialist in superconductivity, has demonstrated a method for dating artifacts based on the magnetic properties of lead, a material widely used in Israel and elsewhere in antiquity. Reich and coworkers found that at cryogenic temperatures, lead becomes a superconductor, but the corrosion products formed from centuries of exposure to air and water (lead oxide and lead carbonate) do not superconduct. On the basis of magnetic measurements and comparison with artifacts that were known (using other techniques) to be up to 2500 years old, the group showed that the mass of lead corrosion products is directly proportional to an object's age (New Journal of Physics, 2003, 5, 99)

§ Amino acid dating

§ Obsidian hydration dating - a geochemical method of determining age in either absolute or relative terms of an artifact made of obsidian

§ Rehydroxylation dating- for dating ceramic material.

§ Paleomagnetism: The polarity of the Earth changes at a knowable rate. This polarity is stored within rocks, through this the rock can be dated

§ Tephrochronology: Volcanic ash has its own signature for each eruption. In a sedimentary sequence the associated material within the ash layer can be dated giving a date for the eruption. If this ash is found anywhere else in the world a date will already be known (bearing in mind transportation time).

§ Oxygen isotope chronostratigraphy: This is based on the climatic stages displayed in SPECMAP relating to different cold and warm stages experienced in deep time for example point 5.5 in the SPECMAP chronology describes the peak of the last interglacial 125,000 years ago.

§ Astronomical chronology

Why did the apple get Adam and Eve in trouble?

Eve ate it first, after being persuaded by the serpent, but some commentators believe Adam was present for their entire conversation without offering moral support. She then offered it to him, who appears to have accepted without a second thought. According to the traditional Western interpretation of Romans 5:12, it was Adam's act of eating it which caused all of his descendents to be born sinful; had Eve eaten it and Adam not, she would have been the only human to know sin.

Who first married couple on earth?

probably a god like Poseidon or Zeus something like that.

What was significant about how God created Eve?

The first thing that we notice is that, just as God did not make Adam out of nothing, he also could not make Eve out of nothing. Thus, we can see that the author of this passage, the Yahwist, saw real limits to God's power. Scholars of the Hebrew language, studying exactly what was written in Genesis, say that even the earth was actually pre-existing.

Making Eve out of Adam's rib was more romantic than making her out of dust, as he made Adam. She would be a part of Adam and owed her existence to him.

Who was the angel who guarded the Garden from Adam and Eve?

Genesis 3:24: So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubim, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

There was no angel. As you can see above, Genesis says that God placed cherubim (sing: cherub) and a flaming sword on the path, so that Adam and Eve could not return.

Cherubim, found throughout much of the ancient Near East, were sphinx-like creatures with human heads, the bodies of lions, and wings. They were not angels, and no name is given in Genesis..

Who was the son of Cain?

Cain's eldest son is recorded in Genesis 4:17 as Enoch (not the same Enoch that God later took from the earth).

Why god created the earth?

I believe that god never created the world!

A:2

Some believe that their god created the world because he is all powerful and he could do anything so he did. They believe that he created it for his personal entertainment and pleasure. He created it all to advertise his greatness and prowess by creating things to serve him just as men created machines and equipment to serve their needs and convenience.

Some believe that this world was created for the same reason as amusement parks, sports and video games.

What happened to Adam and eve after being banished?

After Adam and Eve were expelled from the garden, with no one to "cultivate it and to take care of it,"(Genesis 2:15) it merely grew up uncontrolled, as any untended garden, with only the animals to inhabit it, until it was obliterated by the Flood, its location lost to man except for the Bible's record of its existence.-Genesis 2:8 -15.
