Is this a good Thesis statement?

Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder or ADHD for short, affects millions of children and adults in a very impacting way. People with ADHD are often jittery, inattentive, distracting, and very very smart. Is ADHD treatable with drugs, or is this just a way for teachers, parents, and other caretakers to get their child to calm down without having to truly figure out a real way to treat it?

You don't have ADD or ADHD but you take Adderall because your friend gives it to you what can happen to you?

Here are the side effects of taking Adderall:

  • constipation
  • diarrhea
  • difficulty sleeping
  • dizziness
  • dry mouth
  • headache
  • loss of appetite
  • nausea
  • nervousness
  • restlessness
  • stomach pain or upset
  • unpleasant taste
  • vomiting
Taking this drug when you don't need it also adds the risk that you will have a serious or fatal side effect - when a doctor prescribes medicine, he takes a medical history to know if it is safe for you to take that drug.

Here is what might happen if you take Adderall when you have not seen a doctor and gotten a legal prescription for it - from the Adderall website:

Do not use Adderall if you have any of the following conditions:

Heart disease
Hardening of the arteries
High Blood Pressure
High pressure in the eye (glaucoma)
Overactive thyroid gland

Never take Adderall within 14 days of taking an antidepressant classified as an MAO inhibitor, including phenelzine sulfate. A potentially life-threatening spike in blood pressure could result.

Your doctor will not prescribe Adderall if you have ever had a reaction to similar stimulant drugs. The doctor will also avoid prescribing Adderall if you appear agitated or are prone to substance abuse.

If you have even a mild case of high blood pressure, take Adderall with caution. Be careful, too, about driving or operating machinery until you know how Adderall affects you. It may impair judgment and coordination.

Adderall can make tics and twitches worse. If you or a family member has this problem (or the condition called Tourette's syndrome), make sure the doctor is aware of it. Amphetamines such as Adderall have also been known to aggravate symptoms in seriously disturbed (psychotic) individuals.

If the problem is attention-deficit disorder, the doctor will do a complete history and evaluation before prescribing Adderall, taking particular account of the severity of the symptoms and the age of your child. If the problem is a temporary reaction to a stressful situation, Adderall is probably not called for.

At present, there has been no experience with long-term Adderall therapy in children. However, other amphetamine-based medications have been known to stunt growth, so your doctor will need to watch the child carefully.

If your child has a heart condition, an amphetamine like Adderall should generally not be used. Sudden death has been reported with amphetamine treatment in children with heart problems.

Warning signs of a massive overdose include convulsions and coma. Symptoms of Adderall overdose may include:

Abdominal cramps, assaultiveness, changes in blood pressure, confusion, diarrhea, hallucinations, heightened reflexes, high fever, irregular heartbeat, nausea, panic, rapid breathing, restlessness, tremor, vomiting

If you suspect an overdose, seek emergency treatment immediately.

Could someone have ADD even though the results of her EEG came back normal?

An EEG currently cannot diagnose ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, another name for ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder). It can tell whether or not there are any areas of the brain that are concerning for seizures or a lack of activity, but they are not diagnostic of this condition. They have started trying to use them to predict ADHD behaviors, but this is in the research phase. I would suggest you see a physician and get tested for ADHD in the normal fashion.

Have others been diagnosed wrongly before being diagnosed with ADD?

Many are misdiagnosed before being diagnosed with ADD. ADD is also used for many things that simply are not ADD. Make sure you and your doctor or neurologist agree that you or whoever has ADD. Once you study ADD, you will recognize the signs over and over in others. Our lives are so busy today, we are all encouraged to go every minute, fill every second - we almost have to be ADD to keep up. I sometimes call my ADD "excellent at multi-tasking". It is difficult to know when you have crossed the fine line from normal busy to ADD, except with ADD you seldom get things done, you cannot concentrate on any project very long without getting bored.

Yup, first diagnosed as lazy all that. I was then diagnosed with depression, which was accurate, but it largely stemmed from not being able to cope with my ADD symptoms. I think a few things made diagnosis harder for me: 1)I've always done very well in school, but it's because I have an excellent memory, not because I could ever study for more than 30 minutes at a time and 2) I'm a girl and don't have hyperactivity, which makes it much less noticeable in most situations.

Where can one find help and treatment for ADHD in the Houston TX area?

Here's a link, http://www.iser.com/add-assess-TX.html I am unfamiliar with Houston's ADHD resources, but CHADD (a nonprofit ADD network should be able to help, here is a link to their main site, they have a clearinghouse of links and other info. Good luck! http://www.chadd.org/ My kids had problems with attention, sequencing, calming down and so on--never diagnosed with ADD. However, I found that Houston has a great center for Sensory Integration, which diagnoses and gives them skills to overcome the issues. The best, and the one I used, was Occupational Therapy Center, Inc. Sensory Integration is an additional certification, and the test they give is valid and robust. They did an excellent job with both my boys and both have graduated from college and are working. Not sure it would have happened otherwise. Look up Sensory Integration: http://www.sensoryint.com/

Is there a difference between having ADD and just being eccentric or spontaneous?

Many kids who are just naturally hyper-active have been mis-diagnosed with ADD. The reason is, hyperactive kids show the same symptoms as ADD. Except with kids who are just hyper seem to NOT control themselves during class. They'll jump around and all that but usually it's a case of not being disciplined enough. They talk out of line, and they get enough detentions and time-outs, they're going to learn "I better hold in my energy until recess". However with a child who truly does have ADD, you could give them a thousand detentions and beat them black and blue every time they lost focus on what they were doing, and they still WOULDN'T be able to stop.

It's very hard to determine whether a kid has ADD or if they're just eccentric and spontaneous, that's why a lot of people agree to wait until their teenage years because then you can see a lot more clearly, instead of drugging up your six year old kid.

Not to mention some kids just naturally have shorter attention spans. It's just so hard to tell a problem apart from a trait.

Unfortunately, so many doctors these days will tell parents that their kids have ADD even if they don't, just because that doctor gets more money every time they get to prescribe more pills. It's a shame.

What are effective concentration exercises for an ADHD child to help improve focus and attention span?

Effective concentration exercises for an ADHD child to improve focus and attention span include mindfulness meditation, deep breathing exercises, guided imagery, and physical activities like yoga or tai chi. These exercises can help calm the mind, reduce distractions, and enhance the child's ability to concentrate.

Why does my child experience hyperactivity at night?

There are several possible reasons why your child may experience hyperactivity at night. It could be due to their natural circadian rhythm, which may make them more active in the evening. It could also be related to their diet, screen time before bed, or lack of physical activity during the day. Additionally, underlying conditions such as ADHD or anxiety could also contribute to nighttime hyperactivity. It is important to consult with a healthcare professional to determine the specific cause and appropriate management strategies.
