What is the religious roller coaster?
The Religious Roller Coaster started at the time of which Henry VIII ruled. He started as a catholic, then became a protestant. As king, he introduced bibles in English rather than in latin, and made himself the head of the church. He did not change any services.
His only son, Edward VI, was an even stronger protestant and introduced a new prayer book. He made all church services English, allowed priests to marry and destroyed all church decoration.
Henry's daughter, Mary (of Catherine of Aragon), was strongly Catholic. She made the Pope head of church again, changed church services back to latin, priests were not allowed to marry and she had all protestants persecuted.
Henry's other daughter, Elizabeth I (of Anne Boleyn), tried to find a balance in this religious rollercoaster. To please protestants, she changed church services back to English and allowed priests to marry. To please any catholics, she titled herself 'Governer' of the church rather than 'Head' and introduced a new prayer book.
As you can see, it is called The Religious Rollercoaster because it went from Protestant, to strong Protestant, then back to strong Catholic, and then made even by Elizabeth I. Rules were changed regularly, after each of Henry VIII's children reigned. They all had different beliefs.
