Absolutely. Communication is important, and asking her for feedback if something you say makes her uncomfortable is a sign of respect. I would explain that you are asking in order to respect her, so that you are clearly asserting this request out of compassion.

How did society start worrying about girls getting anorexia 20 to 50 years ago to worrying about obesity?

Our lifestyles changed. People have started eating more fast food or ready meals and do not get enough exercise. 20 to 50 years ago, tips like putting down your fork in between bites or drinking water in between every bite, etc. was the norm and was encourage by many people. It would have been very easy for someone back then to get carried away with weight loss. A great example would be the book Stick Figure by Lori Gottleib.

Was actress Susan Dey anorexic?

Yes. In the 70s, anorexia wasn't considered an illness. Cast members noticed she was never hungry but never really worried about it. Nobody knew what it was. At the height of her illness, she weighed 90 pounds, stopped menustarting, and her skin began to turn noticably orange from eating only carrots. It was only when her fellow cast member on the Partridge Family, Danny Bonaduce, grimaced when seeing her in a bikini and said "you look disgusting" that she knew that she had a serious eatign disorder.

What damage can anorexia cause?

Anorexia nervosa can have serious implications if its duration and severity are significant and if onset occurs before the completion of growth, pubertal maturation or prior to attaining peak bone mass.[52] Complications specific to adolescents and children with anorexia nervosa can include the following:

  • Growth retardation - height gain may slow and can stop completely with severe weight loss or chronic malnutrition. In such cases, provided that growth potential is preserved, height increase can resume and reach full potential after normal intake is resumed.[53] Height potential is normally preserved if the duration and severity of illness are not significant and/or if the illness is accompanied with delayed bone age (especially prior to a bone age of approximately 15 years), as hypogonadism may negate the deleterious effects of undernutrition on stature by allowing for a longer duration of growth compared to controls.[54] In such cases, appropriate early treatment can preserve height potential and may even help to increase it in some post-anorexic subjects due to the aforementioned reasons in addition to factors such as long-term reduced estrogen-producing adipose tissue levels compared to premorbid levels.
  • Pubertal delay or arrest - both height gain and pubertal development are dependent on the release of growth hormone and gonadotrophins (LH and FSH) from the pituitary gland. Suppression of gonadotrophins in patients with anorexia nervosa has been frequently documented.[58] However, a study demonstrated that growth hormone levels were not a predictor of height measures in anorexic patients, which is suggestive of a resistance to growth hormone effects at the growth plate, similar to the resistance to growth hormone of bone-formation markers.[54] Instead, insulin-like growth factor had a larger effect, with lower IGF-I levels and longer durations of illness tending to result in lower height measures than vice versa, although IGF-I levels in anorexic subjects may not necessarily be low enough to affect height measures.

Not to even mention all the stress it puts on the patiant's and family's lives.

  • Reduction of Peak Bone Mass - bone accretion is the highest during adolescence, and if onset of anorexia nervosa occurs during this time and stalls puberty, bone mass may remain low.
  • Hepatic steatosis - fatty infiltration of the liver, is an indicator of malnutrition in children.[52]

If you go anorexic how long does it take to lose 40 pounds?

It depends on the individual and the severity of the disorder. The more calories are restricted and the more exercise is done, the faster a person will lose weight. But anorexia is a very dangerous eating disorder and not a safe or long-term method for weight loss. Proper diet and exercise are better options to stay healthy, and also to keep the weight off and to avoid future health problems that an eating disorder can bring.

How much weight would a 13-year-old lose if you starve yourself for nine days and you are 5'3'' and weigh 136 pounds?

oh honey don't do that. That is unsafe and unhealthy. And when you starve yourself your body actually shuts down to protect itself. Your motabalizim slows down to concerve energy. Now eventually it will use up the fat supply then will start using muscle and vital organ. When you do start eating again. Your body will then hold onto every bit of fat and calorie you eat, prepareing itself for another possible starvation. Your best bet. eat 5 small meals, fruits and veggies lots of water. No pop, sugar , no eating after say 6 or 7 pm. Also start walking. Think about it other than real rural areas have you ever seen a fat mail person? The ones that walk not drive. :) :) :):) Let me know please? Good Luck and May God Bless You. Terri terrico12@verizon.net

What eating disorder is it when you are scared to eat because you think its poisoned?

This isn't actually an Eating Disorder as such. It's a phobia called Citophobia (also Sitophobia or Sitiophobia).

It doesn't mean the person doesn't want to eat, but that they are too terrified. An Eating Disorder where the sufferer does not eat is usually more related to the body, and therefore not a phobia.

One can also have a fear of swallowing, where the food isn't an issue. This is called Phagophobia.

Im 21 years old and am tall and weigh 95 pounds and am not sure What is the best think to eat to gain weight i look anorexic?

If you want to gain weight, the best thing to do it to do so by eating healthy foods. It is not good to gain weight off of fries and chocolate and candies and fats. Instead, aim for lean porteins in your diet (fish, chicken, ect.) and work out to built up muscle. Also, add in some mono-unsaturated fatty acids. These are healthy fats found in foods like seeds, nuts, and some fruits / veggies like avocados. Though they are good for you, they are high in calories. Also, focus on eating more whole grains and dairy. Eating an extra 100 calories a day (over what your body requires) can result in 10 to 15 pounds of weight gain a year.
