How do you quiet the bubbles in my aquarium?

There is a small valve you can buy for a few dollars at any store that sells fish products. You cut the air tubing (with the pump off, first) and connect it to both ends. Then you can adjust the valve, allowing only as much air through as you want.

Should an undergravel filter cover the entire bottom of a fish tank?

Yes, but more hobbyists would recommend that you do not use a UGF system due to cleaning issues, and instead add either an HOB or canister filter

Why is there food floating in the bottom of the fish tank?

This may mean that you are over feeding your fish and they cannot finish what you have put in the tank; reduce the amount of food you give each feeding, and make sure you clean the tank regularly

Why is it difficult to reach into an aquarium and pick up something on the bottom?

Water has a greater density than air, so it takes more force to shove your hand to the bottom.

Does your terrapin need a light or can it just have sunlight?

Yes - simply because the Ultra-Violet (UV) light present in natural sunlight CANNOT pass through glass - which is why you can't get sunburned indoors !

What is the difference between aquarium fluorescent lighting and household fluorescent lighting besides price?

Since fish do not carry out photosynthesis, they do not really care about your choice of light. Incandescent lights will however produce a lot of heat and can make the water near the lights really warm. Since the fluctuating water temperatures can be harmful to your fish, fluorescent lights are a safer choice. They are a bit more expensive, but will on the other hand cut money off your electricity bill. Fluorescent lights are also more similar to sun light and will make the fish look more colorful and brilliant in the aquarium, and aid in the health of invertebrates.

Can an air pump work as water ozonator?

An ozonator requires an air source, a source of ionizing energy (UV-C or electrons), and an application means. The air pump only serves one of these jobs, so no. What is more, producing ozone (and not nitric acid) requires very dry air.

What level should the nitrates be at in a marine aquarium?

In a marine REEF aquarium nitrates should be kept as close to 0 ppm as possible. In a fish only marine aquarium you should strive to keep your nitrates below 20 ppm.

What do you see in the aquarium water under the microscope?

  • bugs
  • bacteria
  • parts of your cell
  • cheek cells
  • virus
  • molecules
  • blood cells
  • inside of the leaves
  • microorganisms
  • atoms
  • kind of water (inside, bugs)
