Is prenatal diagnosis done for Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome?

In families where there has been one child born with WAS, prenatal testing should be offered in subsequent pregnancies.

How many strains of autism are there?

Autism isn't a disease or a virus, thus there are no strains of autism. Autism is just autism, it was previously split up into Autism Spectrum Disorder (Classic Autism), Asperger Syndrome, Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS), childhood disintegrative disorder, and Rett Syndrome - now all are merged under the Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnosis.

Autism is a substance abuse disorder?

im afraid not , im a mum of a autistic child and i dont take any substances , its just something your born with , hope this helps

Can you take a test online for Asperger's Syndrome?

yes there are many tests for aspergers . there is one problem . getting a good score in a test does not mean you have aspergers . if you want to make sure that you have aspergers and you get a high score i suggest you sign up for a diagnosis . if you dont get a high aspie score its not likely you have aspergers and you shouldn't bother much . what a test says is not always true

You could take an online test to give yourself an idea whether you could have Asperger syndrome, but to know for sure you would need to see a properly qualified professional, such as a psychiatrist or psychologist, for a thorough assessment.

What do you think about autism?

It amazes me, makes me sad, and makes me happy. Autism is just a mystery. I watch my brother wondering what he would be like if he wasn't autistic. You can't place the feeling of it if unless you know and get along with an autistic person. Its just heartbreaking sometimes too see a person unable to express there feelings, which is hard, but it happens! :)

So over all i think of it as a mystery. But something that has amazed me as well.

(Its hard to put into words as you can tell! lol)

What are the three crucial areas of development children with autism generally have problems with?

The three crucial areas of development children with autism generally have problems with are social interaction, language and behaviour. However, autism symptoms do vary greatly.

Is thimersol in vaccinations linked to autism?

There is a popular theory circulating the internet that thimersol in vaccinations has contributed to the increase in Autism levels in the US. There is absolutely no scientific evidence that there is any link between the two. When reading material on the internet about this subject, keep in mind the source of the information. Often the information is only opinion, and not researched scientific data. Vaccinations are vital for the health of all people, and have very few side effects, mostly limited to soreness at the injection site and mild fever. Please read the information provided by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) website for more general information about vaccines and vaccine safety, and from the Vaccine Information Center, which provides scientific evidence for the safety and efficacy of vaccines. Both are provided below in "Related Links" Can autism be caused by Thiomersal from vaccines? Technically the jury is still out... but not for long. And parents armed with their children's lab tests have made up their own minds. Since 2002 the U.S. Federal Omnibus Autism Proceeding has investigated whether Thiomersal (Thimerosal) causes autism. Nearly 5,000 children have cases filed in this area of the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program, and the verdicts may be announced early in 2009. (Link to website below.)

Thimerosal is 49.6% ethylmercury by weight, and mercury in any form is a neurotoxin. Manufacturers Safety Data Sheets for Thimerosal state that the compound is a mutagen (mutates genes) and a teratogen (causes cancer). Research indicates Thimerosal causes damage at nanomolar levels: * 0.5 parts per billion ( ppb) mercury = Kills human neuroblastoma cells (Parran et al., Toxicol Sci 2005; 86: 132-140). * 2 ppb mercury = U.S. EPA limit for drinking water. * 20 ppb mercury = Neurite membrane structure destroyed (Leong et al., Neuroreport * 200 ppb mercury = level in liquid the EPA classifies as hazardous waste. * 600 ppb mercury = Level in a currently licensed Hepatitis B, multi-dose vaccine vial, labeled as trace. This is administered at birth. * 25,000 ppb mercury = Level in 94% of injectable influenza vaccines, 2007-2008. 2001; 12: 733-37). Many scientists and physicians worldwide believe that Thimerosal causes neurological and immunological damage, resulting in behaviors rather erroneously given the psychological label of autism spectrum disorder. Some examples: * Boyd E. Haley, PhD of the University of Kentucky, its former chemistry chair, has done extensive research on mercury toxicity from Thimerosal. * Thomas Burbacher, PhD of the University of Washington worked on a 2005 primate study that found ethylmercury bound to brain tissue more quickly than methylmercury. * Washington state chemist Andrew Hall Cutler, PhD, PE, a former NASA employee, treated himself for mercury poisoning. Cutler advises a large Yahoo listserv on biomedical treatments such as chelation, called "Autism-Mercury," and is the author of "Hair Test Interpretation: Finding Hidden Toxicities." Members of Congress who believe Thimerosal is linked to autism include Rep. Dan Burton (D-IN), Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), and former Rep. Dave Weldon, M.D. (R-FL). In May 2008 U.S. News & World Report medical editor Dr. Bernadine Healy was interviewed by CBS investigative reporter Sharyl Attkisson. Dr. Healy, a former director of NIH and former head of the American Red Cross, stated, "I think the government or certain public health officials within the government have been too quick to dismiss the concerns of these families without studying the population that got sick." She also said, "I think public health officials have been too quick to dismiss the hypothesis [vaccines can trigger autism] as irrational without sufficient studies of causation." The U.S. Centers for Disease Control has relied on epidemiological studies to defend its vaccine administration politics, rather than seek biological samples from children on the autism spectrum. Other Thimerosal/autism resources: * 2005 book "Evidence of Harm" by investigative journalist David Kirby * The Coalition for SafeMinds (Sensible Action For Ending Mercury-Induced Neurological Disorders) * No Mercury * Jenny McCarthy's Autism Organization - Generation Rescue * PutChildrenFirst.org === === The information on limits on mercury levels and mercury toxicity is based on studies of a different form of mercury (methylmercury), not thiomersal (ethylmercury). They might not have the same toxicity effects at the same amounts. There is a study that has been looking at the differences between both types, published in Environmental Health Perspectives.

Andrew Wakefield, the researcher who controlled the well-known study that claimed a link between autism and vaccinations had falsified the results to show that vaccinations caused autism. In fact, several of his subjects showed signs of autism before the vaccinations. The medical and hospital records of the children were obtained in early 2009, and those show very different results from the ones that Andrew Wakefield claimed. He is defending himself against charges of professional misconduct for his ethical conduct regarding the study. In addition to falsifying the results, he also had accepted funding prior to begining the study to prove that the MMR vaccine was harmful, so it was a conflict of interest when he did this study. The link for "The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia: A Look at What Causes, and Doesn't Cause, Autism" comments on Wakefield's two studies. Also related to autism and thiomersal (U.S.: thimerosal), a review in Clinical Infectious Diseases (February 2009) of the various studies of vaccines and autism show that there is no difference in autism rates between children vaccinated with thiomersal-containing vaccines and children vaccinated with thiomersal-free vaccines.

How do you train a puppy for a child that has autism?

you must bring somebody to train the dog for the child

What group of people are likely to be born with Asperger's Syndrome?

There is a strong genetic component to autism and Asperger's Syndrome (AS) as shown in twin studies, but it doesn't necessarily mean that a person will inherit it from a parent. There is a greater likelihood of having AS if someone in the family has AS or autism than in the general population. If one child in the family has autism or AS, there is an increased chance that a second child will have autism or AS. If two children in the family have autism or AS, it is much more likely that other children will also have autism or AS.

Children of men over age 40 are more likely to have children with autism spectrum disorders than men who are under age 30 when they have their children. The researchers had not determined whether this was due to sociocultural factors, more genetic mutations in sperm-producing cells as one ages, or something else.

The article "Combination of Early Detection, Timely Treatment Hold Promise for Autism" indicates that older fathers and mothers, low birth weights, shorter pregnancies, and too little oxygen during birth might "be associated with an increased risk for autism spectrum disorders".

Another study shows that mothers who take the epilepsy drug valproate while pregnant are more likely to have children with autism. These are early findings, so valproate might not be the cause, and it might instead have more to do with which epileptic women are prescribed valproate.

In the United States, the places with the lowest rates of autism are in the southern parts of the country and the highest rates are in the northern areas. It was highest in places with the greatest rainfall. So autism spectrum disorders might be associated with staying inside, which could mean less Vitamin D from sunshine or greater exposure to household chemicals. Or, it might be associated with pollutants in the rain. A correlation has been found, but the cause has not yet been determined.

I don't have all of the symptoms of Aspergers. I have a nephew with Autism. Is it possible not to have all the symptoms of Aspergers and still have the condition?

Each person who has aspergers has a different personality, and aspergers manifests itself differently in different persons. So, probably, no one who has aspergers has all the symptoms, because the combination is different in each individual.

Does autism have anything to do with the mother decisions during birth?

No, autism has absolutely nothing to do with the decisions that a mother made during birth. Autism is a neurological condition so is a result of development in the womb during the second trimester. Autism is strongly linked with various genetic factors so whether or not a child is Autistic is most likely due to genetics from both parents (although stronger link with the father).

Will stimming hurt your child?

People with autism spectrum disorders stim as a way of calming themselves or helping them focus. Whether it will hurt the child depends on the stimming activity. If the child rocks back and forth, it probably will not hurt him or her. If the child bangs his head against the wall repeatedly, it could be harmful.

What is the difference between autistic and retarded?

MR (now called Intellectual Disabilities) and mental illness are two different conditions. The main difference is that MR is more genetically based than mental illness. MR or Intellectual Disabilities are the result of chromosomal abnormalities and include impairments in social adaption and learning (IQ). Individuals with mental illness can also have MR, but many do not. Consider MR a developmental disorder of childhood that extends into adulthood. Mental illness can be severe, moderate, or mild and not interfere with learning, social adaptation, or IQ. Mental illness is a biological condition, while MR is a developmental disorder.

Why do autism people flinch when hearing loud noises?

Autism is one of many conditions where children find the information provided by their senses overwhelming. They cannot filter out unpleasant noises or sights or textures like the average adult can. You or I can ignore the ceiling fan and concentrate on the TV, but autistic children find this difficult. Because their brain doesn't have this filter, their next option is to reduce the amount of information reaching their brain, so they may block their ears, shut their eyes or move away from sensations that are uncomfortable.

If they also have a sensory integration dysfunction (SID), sights and sounds that an average person would not be bothered by may be unpleasant, such as crunchy or squishy food, common smells, particular colours or patterns/shapes, cold things, the list goes on.

Most autistic children cope with sensory overload by keeping things in order and on schedule, so they know what to expect and when, and can prepare themselves. Much like you may enjoy night club when you've prepared for it, but would probably be upset if one suddenly appeared in your bedroom one night, autistic children don't like sudden new sensory stimulation.

In short, loud noises are more stressful for them, especially when they're sudden.

What percentage of people have Asperger's Syndrome?

the latest results from the London SNAP Project show that 1 in every 92 persons (1.086 percent), although earlier percentages show less (for example, 18 years ago it was at 0.66 %). Many Experts, Scientists, Psychologists Psychiatrists etc. will beleive that there are more persons with aspergers than diagnosed, like disabled persons government representative John Greally (New Zealand) claims the real percentage including undiagnosed is roughly Double. Also, it is more likely for males to have aspergers than females, the diagnosis rate for boys is 7 times higher than women: people have argued this has something to do with genetics, for example, male genes are more similar to the gentic setup of someone with aspergers than a woman's, thus creating men to be more of an autistic nature. other's will say it's part of a woman's genetic setup to act as they do not have asperger's or appear that way, although they are autistic. so far there is only evidence and theories, not proof.

jatgm - i happen to have aspergers, honestly its just somthing you have to compensate for. if you have it you probly dont even know it, i didnt untill recently i didnt know, i used a mathmatical formula to determine what to say in a conversation because i am socially challenged and a gps to go places because i have extremely poor directional skills. both worked poorly and were noticeable but it was undiagnosed until under a year ago, im 18 currently.

What traits do most people with autism share?

All Autistic people have social and communication problems, most also have sensory issues. For example we all may have problems making and maintaining friendships.

What is Autism Speaks?

Autism Speaks is one of a number of non-profit charities dedicated to raising money to fund research into autism and other autism spectrum disorders (also known as pervasive developmental disorders), including Asperger's syndrome, to find its causes, isolate potential treatments and cures, and work out methods to prevent it.

The Atlanta chapter has contributed much to the autism community and to the Marcus Autism Center, which made a huge impact on my son's progress.

Why do people with autism spectrum disorders get into fights?

One trademark symptom of autism is poorly developed social skills. They often can't understand how their actions affect other people, and similarly, often can't understand the actions or intentions of other people. Because of this lack of understanding, some have very aggressive/defensive tendencies. Others may fight simply because it's how they release energy and they simply don't understand why violence or aggression is harmful.

Do children with autism have a better chance of having a talent for math?

autistic children have talents that you might not know they have, it can be in sports or studies, anything
