Is hidradenitis suppurativa an autoimmune disease?
They are both Autoimmune diseases, that is, when your body attacks itself. So if an individual were predisposed to autoimmune responses, it would be possible that one could have them both simultaneously.
In other words,
They can be.
If someone with HIV bites you do you get infected?
In general, the risk of contracting HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) through being bitten or by biting another person is actually quite low. A number of different variables can influence the actual risk of contracting the virus.
If neither the biter nor the person being bitten are infected with HIV, then the risk of transmission is, of course, zero. If one person does carry HIV in their bloodstream, however, things get a bit more complicated.
There are a couple of different things that must be considered here. One is what is called the "viral load". Simply put, this is the number of viral particles actually circulating in the infected person's bloodstream. If the viral load is high, then it stands to reason that there is a greater chance of HIV particles being transmitted during the bite.
The second thing that must be considered is whether the infected blood came in contact with the non-infected person's blood at any time during the bite. If a non-infected person bites an infected person, even if the infected person has a high viral load of HIV in the blood, the chances of that infected blood finding its way into an open sore or other wound in the mouth of the biter is relatively low. Similarly, an infected biter would have to have blood in his or her mouth to transmit infection to an non-infected "bitee", even if the bite broke the skin.
Despite the relatively low risk here, my general practice is to obtain an "exposure panel" on the non-infected person as soon as possible after the bite to establish their baseline status - whether they are infected with several communicable diseases like Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV - at the time of the bite. The CDC then recommends that the tests be repeated several times over the coming months. Some sources recommend testing serially at the time of the bite, then at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months following the bite, and this is the schedule I use.
No prophylactic (preventive) treatments are currently recommended by the CDC for bites. Instead, their recommended use is limited to what are called "high-risk" exposures, like a needlestick with a large-gauge, hollow-bore needle that has been recently used on a person with known HIV infection and a high viral load.
How does the human body respond to hiv?
The HIV virus is a particularly troubling virus because it attacks the very cells that are responsible for protecting us from disease.
Once the HIV virus enters the blood stream, it specifically targets a group of white blood cells known as CD4+ T cells, or T-cells.
HIV enters the CD4 cells, uses them to make copies of itself, and ultimately destroys the CD4 cell. Over time, the virus will destroy enough CD4 cells to render a person's immune system non-functional.
When a person's immune system becomes depleted, it can no longer protect the body from infection. This means that the person will more easily get sick.
Furthermore, the body become susceptible to "oppoprtunitistic" infections--infections that the bodily would normally fight off, but now cannot due to a compromised immune system.
Can a women that has HIV have a healthy baby?
An HIV+ mom can definitely have HIV- babies. She is encouraged to take some medications during her pregnancy to help prevent the baby from developing the disease and she is commonly asked to have a Cesarian section delivery as opposed to a vaginal delivery to help prevent the baby from coming in contact with the mom's blood. The only real requirement is that the mom not breastfeed after the baby is born, since the virus is present in breast milk.
Lupus means wolf. Some say that the characteristic lupus facial rash (also called a malar or butterfly rash) looks like a person has been bit in the face by a wolf. Others say that that same rash resembles the pattern of color on a wolf's face. I have read both explanations.
Can you get HIV from being scratched?
No. HIV is only transmitted through vaginal and anal sex. Saliva not only doesn't carry HIV but it also carries enzymes that render HIV, if it were present, ineffective. Even if this person had blood in their mouth from a cut or sore, it wouldn't be a risk. Unless the burn was opened, profusely bleeding, and you had just punched the other person in the mouth repeatedly beforehand, you weren't at risk.
Mostly your Immune system, which protects your body from harmful viruses. Which is why it is so hard to come up with a cure for aids because it attacks the one function in your body that prevents all other viruses attacking it. So thus, it would be almost impossible to find a replacement system that functions in the same way.
Can crohns disease be in your mouth?
A thyroid nodule can sometimes cause a person to feel some level of discomfort when they swallow. A thyroid nodule is lump in or on the thyroid gland. The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of the neck, near the Adam's apple.
Is rheumatiod arthritis believed to be an autoimmune disease?
There are many forms of arthritis that are Autoimmune diseases Like for example rheumatoid arthritis's. This is a disease where the immune system of the body mistakenly attacks tissue in joints and other organs and part of the body. However this is not the case in all forms of arthritis For example osteoarthritis is a disease where joints are effected by wear tear and trauma and not as a result of inflammation caused by the immune system.
How common is Crohns disease in the US?
It certainly feels like it's common - once others know you have it, it seems like everyone knows someone who has it. If you have done any research you will note that it is not a rare condition - The good news is they have a lot a data on the what medicines can help and what you can expect. The bad news is still no info on what causes it or how it can be eliminated. But whether it is rare or common doesn't matter - what matters is if you have it, you need to find away to make you world work. Get to know your doctors, don't be afraid to challenge your doctor. If something seems wrong (you know your body) you are a person first and foremost, a patient only when you have to be and never a victim.
Can HIV virus transfer through saliva?
Any body fluids can transmit HIV from the carrier to someone else.
no
Can your 12 year old son have lupus?
Although it is most commonly diagnosed in women of child-bearing age, lupus can affect anyone of any gender or any age. It is possible for your 12 year old son to have lupus. If you think your son might have lupus you should make an appointment to have him seen by a doctor.
What is a support agency that helps crohn's disease?
There are so many support groups and most are specific to both countries and regions within those countries. I will give you a list to start. All of these are available on the web and can give you more information specific to where you live. Please refer to the "related links" below for more information.

What steps would you take if you were diagnosed with Crohns disease?
Most of us know the signs and symptoms when they first appear. Pain and cramping ranging from mild to very sharp in the abdomen and an urgent need to run to the toilet. Much like what a non Crohns person would feel with a bad case of what most call stomach flu.
When these symptoms start we usually stop eating anything. Eating often triggers the cramping and urge to defecate immediately, so in response, we stop doing what hurts hoping that the problem will go away on its own. Sometimes it does, most often it does not and invariably the cramping will start even after taking a liquid like water or clear soup.
Lack of nutrition usually is followed by exhaustion to the point where even getting out of bed ( one more time) in the morning is difficult, even worse, dehydration has its own dangers. Smart patients seek medical attention prior to this since they know from experience allowing the flare to continue will lead to a stay in the hospital.
Is there a cure for Celiac Disease?
No, there is no known cure for Celiac Disease. There are however ongoing studies for different therapies. Some show some real promise but this may be three, five or ten years down the road. The ONLY treatment for this disease is to go on a strict Gluten Free diet. That means no wheat, barley, Rye or Oats (Oats are safe but only from a certified Gluten free manufacturer and only after having been on a gluten free diet for six months).
There is no cheating once on the diet.. to cheat even once a month would seriously setback ones healing of the small intestine.
Current research:
nexpep is supposed to start clinical trials of its vaccine therapy 2008.
albatherapeutics is almost into phase III of AT-1001, which will enable Celiacs to eat out without fear of cross contamination, but won't let you eat gluten like a slice of pizza. Studies are showing better results than anticipated and who knows, maybe it will allow someone to have a cheat day now an then? The premise is that Celiacs have leaky guts, by closing the leak the gluten peptide is unable to cause an autoimmune response which causes the damage to the small intestine.
alvinepharma is starting phase I this year on its EP-B2, which is a peptide prolease that is supposed to rapidly consume gluten peptide and like "pac man" break its acid chain down small enough that the body no longer recognizes the gluten as an enemy. Studies so far indicate that it too will only limit cross contamination issues, but it may do more? Testing will take at least five years.
Finally...
There is other enzyme therapies being explored in Europe, particularly Holland. This holds greater promise as the enzyme is supposed to like hostile acid environments, its already being manufactured for industrial uses so its cheap to produce. This enzyme is so strong that the early reports are that no gluten remains after taking the treatment. So far its been tested in a lab and on some dogs... again, it will take years for anyone to get this fully tested.
There you have it.. other than research to show what else this horrible disease causes there seems to be little other interest by the medical community on a whole... no money in cures only in pills...
What alcohol can someone with celiac disease have?
Not that I know of. Celiac is a genetic disorder that is inherited from your parents. Alcohol can make it worse however.
------
Another form of the question may be, "Can celiac disease cause alcoholism?". I strongly believe this to be the case. Through personal experience and what I've read from others, alcoholism is often apparent long before a Celiac diagnosis. Celiacs who ingest gluten while unaware of the disease may experience extreme anxiety and depression due to neurotoxins in the blood. Alcohol can provide a temporary escape from the unexplained physical and mental symptoms that result. This gives the impression that Celiac may have been caused by alcohol, when in fact, it is the other way around.
This is a difficult question to answer. No two cases of lupus are alike. It's a very... unique disease. However, there are a symptoms that commonly show up; here they are.
Fatigue and Fever - These two symptoms show up a lot, with numerous diseases. As such, it's difficult to diagnose lupus from just fatigue and fever.
Joint Pain/Swelling - Similar to fatigue and fever, this is a very common symptom. Hard to diagnose anything without more info.
Facial Rash - This is one symptom that's very exclusive to lupus. A butterfly shaped rash that covers the cheeks and the bridge of the nose.
Skin Lesions - Skin lesions also appear in cases of lupus. They usually show up, or worsen, with sun exposure.
Raynaud's Phenomenon - Raynaud's Phenomenon is where fingers and toes turn white and blue when exposed to the cold. This often freaks people out, you can probably see why, though it's actually not that dangerous.
Shortness of Breath, Chest Pain, Dry eyes, Headaches, Confusion and Memory Loss - I'm roping all of these together, because like the first few symptoms, these are hard to attribute to lupus individually.
Basically, you should see your doctor if you develop an inexplicable rash, constant fever, and persistent aching/fatigue. Also, any of the other symptoms mentioned above added onto this barrage qualifies as well.
Lupus, similar to herpes, has stages in which the disease's symptoms show up or get worse. These are called flares. After these flares, the symptoms can improve or even disappear completely.
Can Marinol be used to treat Crohn's disease?
It has been used.
Marinol is a type of medicine called a cannabinoid. It attaches to special receptors in the brain stimulating appetite and reducing nausea. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved marinol to treat nausea and vomiting associated with cancer chemotherapy in patients who have failed to respond adequately to conventional treatments.
Dronabinol is a synthetic version of a naturally occurring compound known as
delta-9-THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) You might recognize THC as the active ingredient of marijuana.
MARINOL is not marijuana. MARINOL does not contain the additional chemicals and impurities associated with marijuana.
There has been some limited use of Marinol to control vomiting in patients undergoing Methotrexate treatments for severe Crohn's but its effects have yet to be well documented. Because appetite suppression is usually a Crohn's patients response to "you eat, you hurt" or "you eat and run to the toilet" treating the Crohn's successfully will in turn treat the lack of appetite.
Does Crohn's disease cause herpes?
It does not cause herpes however the compromised immune system renders the crohns patient susceptible to a variety of illnesses including herpes zoster (shingles).
Can you get HIV even if he never ejaculated in you?

Here are some of the symptoms that AIDS sufferers have or may begin to have: * Flu-like symptoms * A cold that just won't go away * Loss of energy * Loss of apetite * Purple patching of the skin * Soreness of the body * Growth of sores in the throat * Dramatic loss of weight If you are worried that you may have AIDS, contact your doctor IMMEDIATELY.
How are autoimmune and rheumatic diseases diagnosed?
Autoimmune and rheumatic diseases can be difficult to diagnose. People with the same disease can have very different symptoms. A helpful strategy in the diagnosis of these diseases is to find and identify an autoantibody in the person's blood
Which cells types can be infected by HIV?
The HIV virus specifically targets a white blood cell called the CD4 or T-helper cells.
T-cells are among the most important cells in the immune system. They become active when an antigen is present and they are produced in the bone marrow (and from there they go to the thymus gland, hence the "T" designation.) T-cells are trained to respond to a particular target and go on the prowl for its enemy.
Normally, we have billions of T-cells in our bodies. However, once the HIV virus starts to attack them, their numbers begin to drop. This weakens our body's ability to fight anything foreign, something that T-cells are specifically made to do.
