There is some controversy as to what it's about because it sounds as if the rev is saying his final goodbyes to his fellow bandmates (he died three days after he wrote it) however, there is no proof for this as his autopsy results revealed he died from natural causes. To make the matter even more confusing though, the original title for the song was to be simply "Death" but the band changed it to "Fiction", a nickname the rev gave himself. All in all though, it seems as if the song is about the importance of friendship in this dark, distant and detached world we live in today. Matt shadows said in an interview that the entire album focuses on how emotionally detached kids are these days from the world so that could also be a part of the song. Yes, Avenged Sevenfold writes their own music. M. Shadows writes most of the lyrics, while Synyster Gates, Zacky Vengeance and Johnny Christ write the guitar parts. The Rev. has written all the drum parts for the albums up until Nightmare, as he passed away after writing his parts for that record.

Although it is possible, Zacky Vengeance has never publicly stated if he is or not. He has been accused of worshiping the devil, but he confirmed that he does not. Zacky Vengeance was raised Catholic, so most people assume that is his current religion.

It is believed by his friends and fans that he did not commit suicide, and died from a bad combination of pain and insomnia medication, along with a large amount of alcohol. It is still up for debate on whether he commited suicide or not, just keep in mind that Rev specifically told Matt over the phone one night that he knew he would not live past 30. This more than likely because he knew his enlarged heart would play a part in his death sometime in the near future or his struggle with hard drugs continued to be apart of his daily schedule. Regardless of how he died James was definitely a genius. He viewed the world in a way that others did not, and like all geniuses he jumped into life, and never touched the bottom.
